Montpellier, 1925. Limited Edition. -CRI ECRIT, JEAN COCTEAU Translating to a 'written cry', the poem's title holds the poet's call to God, placing it before us on the page. 'I will know where my friends are', the poet speaks, demandingly. 'They were too young to die. God, where have you put them?' A strong modern poem by Cocteau; printed with just four lines to a page, the wild, mad voice of the bereaved becomes louder. With a frontispiece by Henri de La Jonquière. Description:
London: F.S. Ellis, 1871. Night passed, day dawned, and we grew full of mirth As with the ever-rising wind Still farther lay our threatened death behind, Or so we thought : some eighty men we were, Of whom but fifty knew the shipman's gear, The rest were uplanders ; midst such of these As knew not of our quest, with promises Went Nicholas dealing florins round about, With still a fresh tale for each new man's doubt, Till all were fairly won or seemed to be To that strange desperate voyage o'er the sea." [The Earthly Paradise, prologue.] Fifth edition of parts one and two, and second edition of parts three and four. A fine set of Morris's third book, later published by the Kelmscott Press. Based on classical and medieval sources, The Earthly Paradise is best known for its introductory poems on each month of the year, perhaps for the way in which they reflect the beautiful textile designs of their creator, William Morris : ‘O fair midspring, besung so oft and oft, / How can I praise thy loveliness… Read More

Description:
London: John Murray, 1834. A beautiful overlap of literature and travel description, being a tour through Mediterranean and Continental sites of interest in the life and tales of Lord Byron. Brief biographical descriptions are scattered throughout. Edward Francis Finden's masterful series of steel engravings from the works of J.M.W. Turner, William Westall and other leading landscape and portrait artists of the day capture the dreamy and romantic qualities of Byron's poetry. Scarce first edition. Three volumes, large octavo, contemporary half morocco with gilt panelled spines, marbled boards; engraved title page of one volume is frayed along the fore-edge, occasional mild foxing and offsetting, boards rubbed but a handsome near-fine set nonetheless.

Oxford: H. Daniel, 1890. Gilt Morocco. Edition limited to one hundred copies. 'They that in play can do the thing they would Having an instinct throned in reasons place/ -And every perfect action hath the grace Of indolence or thoughtless hardihood- These are the best: yet be there workmen good Who lose in earnestness control of face Or reckon means and rapt in effort base Reach to their end by steps well understood. Me whom thou sawest of late strive with the pains Of one who spends his strength to rule his nerve- Even as a painter breathlessly who strains His scarcely moving hand lest it should swerve- Behold me now free from the care that stains And master of the art I chose to serve.'. Description:
London: Frederick and Warne & Co, 1890. Second Edition. Particularly attractive edition of a rare Kate Greenaway title. First published in 1883 with printed paper wrappers, both early editions of this collection are now uncommon. "On the strength of 'Under the Window' and 'A day in a child's life' (1881), 'Mother Goose' (1881) and 'Little Ann' (1883), the 'Art Journal' claimed Kate Greenaway had earned a remarkable reputation and "has obtained a position of standing among the artists of the present day" - the artists, not illustrators: clearly she had elevated herself from the prejudices surrounding illustration." Engen, Rodney. ‘Kate Greenaway', Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, 1980. The material presented here is of the instructional sort, typical of the Victorian era, with titles such as 'Dirty Jim', 'Meddlesome Matty' and 'Mischief', outlining the results of these moral and behavioural errors. Although individual poems are not ascribed, the work contains poems by Ann Taylor… Read More

Description:
Sydney: Kemp & Fairfax, 1842. First Edition. Rare, and very fine: a presentation copy (inscribed on the front endpaper to Walter Wrottersley "from the translator") of an unusual publication for this period in Australia, a translation of an obscure commentary on Aristotle. Almost nothing of a philosophical bent was published in Australia before the 1850s and the creation of the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne. Perhaps the earliest philosophical work printed in Sydney? Elwin says that he translated part of the eighteenth-century writer Metastasio's critical observations on the Poetics in order to place "such portion as appeared to be likely to engage the attention, as well from the nature of the immediate topic, as from the spirited manner in which it is treated... within reach of the English reader". Metastasio, or Pietro Antonio Domenico Trapassi, is best known today because Mozart used his "La Clemenzo di Tito" as the basis for his libretto. Ferguson originally entered the translator as Elwin… Read More

Come away, O human child To the waters and the wild With a fairy, hand in hand..." -W.B. Yeats A charming drawing by Ethel Jackson Morris, inscribed with a passage of poetry by William Butler Yeats. A school of fantasy illustration emerged in Melbourne in the first part of the twentieth century, inspired by the work and commercial success of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Ethel Jackson Morris, along with Christian Yandell and Ethel Spowers, were at the forefront of this coherent artistic Melbourne phenomenon. Description:
London: Augener Ltd in Association with Adam and Charles Black, 1911. H. Willebeek le Mair [Henriette]. Henriette Willebeek le Mair (1889-1966) was a precocious child artist, her first book being published at the tender age of fifteen. She was actively encouraged by her parents and received instruction from the noted Parisian illustrator, Maurice Boutet de Monvel. Le Mair illustrated a total of fourteen books in her distinctive style characterised by gentle forms and subdued and sophisticated colouring. Before her conversion of Sufi Islam, Le Mair ran an nursery in her home and used the children as models for her art. The present edition is a very beautiful book: Adam and Charles Black were renowned for the quality and finesse of their colour plate reproduction. 'Our Old Nursery Rhymes' is one such book as the colour production is neither bold nor washed out and the publishers have faithfully reproduced the gentle tones the author intended for her beautiful plates. Oblong quarto, gilt lettering and… Read More

San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1929. First Edition. One of an edition of 325 copies signed by the author. Printed by the Brothers Johnson at the Windsor Press, handset type on handmade Arches paper. Finely reasoned essay on poetry venturing from the songs of the Navajo to a lengthy discussion on Chinese poems and Wordsworth. 'It is not necessary that culture bring about the death of poetry, as it did in the Rome of Virgil. The cynics are wrong who see in our future no place for an art which belongs, they say, to the childhood of the race. The head of a man and the heart of a child working together as in the Chinese have made possible with one race and may make possible with any race, even in the thick of the most intricate culture, the persistence of the purest poetry.' Witter Bynner. Limited edition of 325 signed copies. Small slim quarto, original red cloth, small neat previous owner's inscription on inner cover, back board partially sunned, else fine.
