Description:
Paris: Fabrique Générale d'Articles de Voyages, 1840. First Edition. Alexis Godillot (1816-1893) was a contemporary of Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) and first achieved renown in Paris for his beautiful hand-made luggage. With a workshop situated just a few blocks away from Vuitton's, this catalogue comes from this very early period of Godillot's life before he had revolutionised footwear by differentiating the moulding of the left shoe from the right and become the famous shoemaker who would go on to equip over one hundred thousand French soldiers for The Crimean War. 'Godillot' remains a slang French term for 'boot' to this day. The album features superb hand-coloured lithographs with an original sketch showcasing nearly one hundred accessories including bags, picnic baskets, apparel, wonderful old trunks, tents, and hammocks- true 'objets nomades' - many of which are in surprisingly bold and modern designs. A beautiful, rare, and precious catalogue of the articles a traveller might require for… Read More

Description:
Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1893. The splendid first French edition, which puts the English edition of 1890 in the shade. It is scarce - and not recorded by Ferguson - although almost half of the book is devoted to the Australian section of the voyage. Lord and Lady Brassey made several cruises around the world in their yacht, Sunbeam. Lady Brassey's account of their earlier voyage published in 1879 was very popular and went through many editions. Undertaken in 1886-7, this was to be Lady Brassey's last voyage. She died before completing the cruise and her grieving husband, Lord Brassey, completed her work for publication. Lord Brassey later authorised this edition, translated into French by Gaston Bonnefont. The many fine plates and illustrations are after designs by R.T. Pritchett, and engraved by Whymper, Cooper and Pearson. There are too many to comment on - more than two hundred in total - but the work is particularly rich with nautical scenes, as well as charming vignettes ranging from street… Read More

Description:
Melbourne & Sydney: Tatchell, Garritty & Dobson, 1892. First Edition. Walter Withers, Ernest Ferris, Fred Kneebone, and John Clemens. A celebration of the Australian Christmas with illustrations by one of the founding members of the Heidelberg School, Walter Withers. Issued as a souvenir by the Post and Telegraph Departments, this charming work includes many portraits of the government officers, together with depictions of their offices ranging from the Sydney General Post Office to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. It is further illustrated by many 'picture postcard' views of Australian and New Zealand cities and landscapes. This is the only recorded publication by the artists, Fred Kneebone and Ernest Ferris, but all three artists have almost equal shares in the production. Walter Withers first arrived in Melbourne in 1883 but did not settle there until 1888, opening his Melbourne studio in 1891. Produced when Australia began to suffer deeply from the depression of the 1890s, the artists would… Read More

Description:
London: T. Hatchard, 1852. First Edition, First Printing. Very good. Rare: first edition, first issue of a work that was one of the most popular goldfields-era accounts of Australia. ‘If you were in Sydney, you would hardly think you were in a savage island; for you would see no savages in the streets. What is become of those who once lived in these parts? They are all dead, or gone to other parts of the island. The last black near Sydney, used to talk of the old times, and say, "When I was a pick-a-ninny, plenty of black fellow then. Only one left now, mitter."' Mortimer's work went through many reprints and new editions, but this first edition is very scarce. Ferguson listed only three copies of the work, all later: in his own collection, the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia (eighth, twelfth and thirteenth thousand respectively). [Ferguson, 12871]. Small octavo, bound in original gilt decorated green cloth, frontispiece, folding map and numerous vignettes;, a little foxed,… Read More

Description:
London: John Murray, 1834. A beautiful overlap of literature and travel description, being a tour through Mediterranean and Continental sites of interest in the life and tales of Lord Byron. Brief biographical descriptions are scattered throughout. Edward Francis Finden's masterful series of steel engravings from the works of J.M.W. Turner, William Westall and other leading landscape and portrait artists of the day capture the dreamy and romantic qualities of Byron's poetry. Scarce first edition. Three volumes, large octavo, contemporary half morocco with gilt panelled spines, marbled boards; engraved title page of one volume is frayed along the fore-edge, occasional mild foxing and offsetting, boards rubbed but a handsome near-fine set nonetheless.

You might recognize the iconic image of the mysterious man in the trench coat and Fedora who appears on the cover of this catalog; a plethora of unauthorized vintage posters reproduce him. Often uncredited or listed ‘anonymous', the original artwork was actually designed by the successful and talented French fashion illustrator, Marcel Hemjic. So now we know. Description:
London: Macmillan & Co, 1900. Presumed First English Edition. Letters of Marque" and "From Sea to Sea" by Rudyard Kipling. There is something lovely about this copy, a beautiful old library book that looks exactly as it ought to. "...We are now running down to Penang with the thermometer 87* in the cabins, and anything you please on deck. We have exhausted all our literature, drunk two hundred lemon squashes, played forty different games of cards (Patience, mostly), organised a lottery on the run(had it been a thousand rupees instead of ten I should not have won it), and slept seventeen hours out of twenty four. It is perfectly impossible to write, but you may be morally the better for the story of the Bad People of Iquique which, 'as you have not before heard, I will now proceed to relate.' It has just been told to me by a German orchid-hunter, fresh from nearly losing his head in the Lushai hills..." Octavo, bound in half leather, 497 pages, missing title page and prelims, covered in library… Read More

Melbourne: Green Press, 1937. Signed Limited Edition. Edition limited to 100 numbered copies: Sir Ernest Scott's copy with signature on front endpaper. "Even today, when professional interest in undertaking work in Asia is stronger than ever, Hardy Wilson's up-front appreciation of the importance of Chinese architecture stands without parallel." Stanislaus Fung  & Mark Jackson, Architectural Theory Review  (Issue 1: Volume 1, 1996) Building upon an already established relationship with the National Library, Wilson's orginal drawings for the fifty plates in "Grecian and Chinese Architecture" joined their collection in 1935. "It was while contemplating the roofline of Purulia that Wilson made a discovery that would change the direction of his work. He became dissatisfied with the way the straight, Western line of the roof appeared to fall unchecked towards the ground, with nothing to ‘hold the eye' on its downward journey. Description:
London: Bancroft & Co, no date. A delightful example of the work of renowned Czech illustrator and paper engineer, Vojtech Kubasta (1914 -1992). Originally born in Vienna, Kubasta trained as an architect in Prague yet barely practiced, his career interrupted by the invasion of Nazis in the Second World War. Kubašta turned his fine engineering skills towards the creation of pop-up books for children, revitalising three dimensional paper craft techniques that had drifted out of print, in part because of the bombing of the German printing presses but largely due to their expense. Kubašta's leadership and influence in the field secured his reputation and penetrated the difficult and complex politics of his era. He was granted permission to work for Walt Disney and inspired a resurgence of the ‘pop-up' format in both England and America. 'How Columbus Discovered America' was his first book. Said to be the first movable book published in Vojtech's Panascopic Model Series all of which were… Read More
