Description:
Moscow: Mosfilm, 1938. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1938 Russian epic film. Phototeque stamp on the verso, along with a production number stamp 5251. One of director Sergei Eisenstein's undisputed masterpieces, and one of the great historical films, telling the story of how the titular Alexander Nevsky, a Russian prince, led a ragtag army to battle the invading Teutonic knights of the Holy Roman Empire. Though it utilized a more conventional narrative than Eisenstein's previous films, the film employed the most advanced cinematic techniques of its day, and remains a remarkable visual achievement. The film was also a remarkable piece of propaganda: a year after the film's release, Stalin signed a nonaggression pact with Hitler-and suddenly the film was removed from cinemas, as it no longer reflected the party line against Germans. As a result, ephemera from the film's original release is scarce. 8.5 x 11.5 inches. Very Good plus, lightly worn at the corners. Criterion Collection 87.

Description:
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures, 1938. Revised White script for the 1939 film, seen here with the title "I Robbed a Bank," which has been stricken through on the title page. A gang attempts a bank robbery, only to find that one of the gang member's sisters works there. The gang abducts her and a truck driver while attempting their getaway, and the hostages must secretly try to help the cops find the fugitives. Written by well loved humorist S.J. Perelman and his wife Laura Perelman, "Ambush" marks a significant but entertaining departure from their best-known works, such as their co-writing work on Marx Brothers films "Monkey Business" and "Horse Feathers." White side-stapled titled wrappers, dated December 13, 1938, noted as production No. 1198 and copy No. 0038. Title page integral with the front wrapper, as issued. 115 eaves, with last page numbered D-28. Mimeograph duplication, with blue revision pages throughout dated between 10-10-38 and 10-21-38. New York: International Projector Corporation, 1931. Archive consisting of an original sales brochure and eleven photographs for portable Acme-Simplex 35mm film projectors, from 1931. The Simplex projector line was one of the most popular US brands from the silent era until the transition to digital projection in the 1990s. Portable projectors were available in both silent and sound formats, and in the 1930s were still marketed primarily as an educational tool for institutional use, for schools, prisons, hospitals, churches, travel agencies, and the like. Projector technology would rapidly accelerate throughout the ensuing decades, reaching a peak in the postwar period, when personal projector use would hit an all-time high. Included in the archive is a 22 page sales brochure, photo-illustrated throughout, containing in-depth descriptions of the projectors offered for sale by International Projector Corporation in 1931, as well as several pages describing the projectors' utility in a variety of… Read More

Description:
Barcelona: Various Film Studios, 1971. Collection of 158 Spanish film heralds for American genre and drama films released 1923-1971. Nearly all heralds were printed in Barcelona, by printers Marti y Mari, I.G. Viladot, Juan Barguno, Melguizo, Jose Sabadell, Graficas Valencia, and others, upon the Spanish release of international films. Most are for American films, a few Spanish productions, and notable others include English's "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" (1941), Tourneur's "Cat People" (1942), Fleming's "Gone with the Wind" (1939) and "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt" (1943), Beebe's "The Shadow of the Eagle" (1932), from Blystone's "Our Hospitality" (1923) to Hough's "Twins of Evil" (1971). Film handbills, or heralds, were essentially mini film posters, and were produced as an economical way to promote both international and regional films, distributed by press agencies and theaters shortly before the film's local release. Many were released with specific text on… Read More
