Jepsen chose to begin this series with records beginning with the letter M (volume 5), following to the end of the alphabet, starting again from letter A, and continuing through to letter L. Jepsen explains his desire to do so in the foreword to volume 5: "It seems that the greatest of all discographies, 'Jazz Directory,' has stopped publication in the middle of the letter 'L,' and although I know I cannot reach the high standard of 'Jazz Directory' I have decided to begin this work with the letters following 'L' and to the end of the alphabet, after this I will start again from 'A'.
