Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1960. Archive of 14 vintage large-format press photographs of the infamous protest against the House on Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) at San Francisco City Hall on May 13, 1960. Reference Library stamps on the versos, along with brief mimeo snipes, and several with newspaper clippings adhered to the versos. By 1960 HUAC had been widely denounced by everyone from figures of the American counterculture to former President Harry Truman, but the committee nevertheless continued to hold hearings around the country to investigate alleged local subversive activities. Arriving in San Francisco for the first of three days of hearings (from May 12-14), the committee were met by a group of protesters organized by civil liberties activist Frank Wilkenson. The protesters found themselves barred from entering City Hall, however, as HUAC had already filled the hearing chamber with supporters. Demonstrators began to chant outside the building, demanding entrance. The publicity generated by… Read More

N.p.: N.p., 1956. Revised Draft script for the 1956 play, INSCRIBED on the title page, "For my dear friend Steve Fritchman / with gratitude for helping me bring it to life / Lester." Stephen Hole Fritchman was a noted minister of the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, which put on the only known production of play, which premiered on May 19, 1956, prior to the revised June, 1956 script found here. Description:
Beverly Hills, CA: United Artists, 1958. Original pressbook for the 1958 film. Just as Erskine Caldwell's 1933 novel was met with scrutiny and censorship upon its publication, the film adaptation twenty-five years later met with similar disapproval. Scenes involving actresses Tina Louise and Fay Spain were perceived as obscene, the film was said to call marital fidelity into question, and even worse: the film portrayed a popular uprising of mill workers. Many theaters either banned the film entirely or admitted only movie-goers ages 18 and up. Though written by Ben Maddow, a blacklisted radical leftist documentary and poetry writer, screenwriting for the film was attributed to Philip Yordan, a writer often credited for scripts written by blacklisted authors. Set in the American South, shot on location in California. Ten pages, saddle stiched. 11 x 8.5 inches. Lightly toned, else Near Fine.

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1971. Original script for two plays by Academy Award winning screenwriter Howard Koch. Copy belonging to an unknown actor who played the character of Norm in "Dead Letters," with his lines highlighted and manuscript annotations regarding dialogue and action throughout. In a preliminary note, Koch describes "Dead Letters" and "The Campers" as "two plays, each approximately an hour in length and adding up to a full evening in the theatre. Since they are linked to the same theme-the consequence of practicing love in its humanistic sense, they are, I believe, appropriate companion pieces. I have placed 'Dead Letters' first since it treats the negative aspect of the theme (love as a threat that must be done away with), while 'The Campers' suggests the positive possibility that love multiplied in a new generation may prove to be a catalyst in achieving a change of values underlying the human condition. Since the plays are intended to be representative of a larger frame of reference rather… Read More

Description:
Mexico City: Ultramar Films, 1952. Draft script for the 1954 Mexican film. Also included are seven film still photographs from the film. A rare pre-production script from Luis Buñuel's first color film, one of the key productions from his Mexican period, written with Hugo Butler, who was at the time living in self-imposed exile in Mexico with Dalton Trumbo (both blacklisted by the HUAC) and writing under various pseudonyms. Single substantive manuscript pencil correction toward the end of the text. One of Buñuel's more straightforward narratives, quite faithful to the source material, but with a whopping dream sequence as bizarre as anything one might find in the director's later work. Tall side-stapled self-wrappers, dated "Mexico / 1952," with credits for director-screenwriter Buñuel, screenwriter Butler (under the Roll pseudonym) and producers Oscar Dancigers and Henry F. Ehrlich. 95 leaves, mimeograph duplication. Very Good condition, toned at the edges, some offsetting on the front… Read More

In the letter, Foreman agrees to meet with Selznick to discuss a project Selznick is working on for Universal. Included are two photostat copies of related letters from Selznick to Foreman, going into some detail about the proposed project. Subsequent to his move, Foreman wrote a number of other notable screenplays, including "The Sleeping Tiger" (1954), "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) and "The Guns of Navarone" (1961).
