Chile: Nascimento, 1954. First printing of this edition. One of 1000 numbered copies (this being No. 680) SIGNED by the author. This copy retains the scarce insert on green paper that was issued with all copies, a bibliographic note on the genesis and publication history of the poem by Jorge Sanhueza. The first definitive edition of the poems, including the Chambi photographs referenced in "The Latin American Photobook." The poems first appeared as "Canto II" in Neruda's "Canto General" (1950), and have regularly been translated into English. Comprises the libretto of "Arlecchino," a one-act opera composed by Ferruccio Busoni in 1913, and originally performed at the Zürich Opera House in 1917. Lithograph illustrations throughout by Busoni's son Rafaello. Very Good plus, with no dust jacket as issued, with faint foxing on the endpapers and moderate wear on the spine.

INSCRIBED by the author to American journalist Edgar Mowrer on the limitation page: "To Edgar Mowrer / from / Edward Storer / Rome / 30/1/'60." Considered by many to be "the dean of American foreign correspondents," Edgar Mowrer was born in Bloomington in 1892. He began working as a reporter in France in 1914, having been pressed into service alongside his brother, then working for the "Chicago Daily News." Perceiving the growing power of the Nazi Party, Mowrer began reporting on the rise of Adolf Hitler, publishing day-by-day dispatches from Berlin that would win him a Pulitzer Prize in 1933.
