Follows the lives of five young Marines from boot camp through a hellish tour of Vietnam in 1968. They find a possible way out of battle if they can win a soccer tournament. Heavily corrected original typescript for a story by Dieter Dengler and ghost-writer Trevor Armbrister, "Dengler" (here with the hand-corrected title, "Vietnam Exclusive: I Escaped from a Red Prison"). The story first appeared in the December 3, 1966 issue of the "Saturday Evening Post," and was adapted many years later by noted German director Werner Herzog for his 1997 documentary film, "Little Dieter Needs to Fly," then remade by him in 2006 as a dramatic version titled "Rescue Dawn," starring Christian Bale as Dengler. Being that the story was ghost-written by Trevor Armbriste in 1966 (the same year of Dengler's escape)-and that Dengler was a military pilot and not a writer, in addition to still recovering from injuries at the time-it is most likely that the substantive corrections are Armbriste's. Notable as a slightly atypical blaxploitation film hailing from Italy, "Mean Mother" tells the story of two Vietnam War deserters who flee to Spain and Italy and get involved in the European crime world. Largely low-budget and geared towards a young urban audience, blaxploitation films often depicted African Americans overcoming hostile authorities through cunning and violence, as well as conflicts internal to the culture. The final film in Russ Meyer's "noir" cycle (1964-1965), or "Gothic" period, as Meyer puts it, a series of sexploitation films shot in black and white, with powerful and vengeful female characters, male impotence, and a serious dramatic plot involving less of the "nudie" filmmaking style so prominent in the director's early films.
