Np, 1903. First edition. Hardcover. Orig. vellum spine and dark gray boards. Fine in tattered original glassine. 42 pages. 26.5 x 18 cm. Engraved frontispiece of Farmer. The first women to become president of a major educational institution, Wellesley College at age 26. In the early 1890's she became the first president of the new University of Chicago. Throughout her academic career she was a staunch advocate of higher education for women during the late 19th century. Palmer's life was commemorated at a service at Harvard University in 1903 attended by college presidents whom she knew and other notable individuals in higher education. Unopened, printed at the Merrymount Press by D.B. Updike.
