Eight pages of adverts at rear. Chaillu explored the regions of West Africa in the neighborhood of the equator, gaining considerable knowledge of the delta of the Ogooué River and the estuary of the Gabon, and the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy people of central Africa. Interior contents very fresh and bright as is the front cover gilt decoration. Spine faded, slight rubbing to backstrip extremities.

London: William Crofts, 1836. First edition. Hardcover. Modern ruby cloth, black leather spine label printed in gilt. Very good. 412 pages. 23 x 15 cm. Two folding maps with outline coloring, 26 plates, two in color. Gardiner attended the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth, serving at sea from 1810-1826, rising to rank of Commander. He then devoted the remainder of his life to missionary work, founding the first missionary station at Port Natal. From 1834 to 1838 he attempted to establish Christian churches in Zululand without success. Color plates clean, a few black and white engravings toned at margins, some text toning, last thirty leaves one half centimeter stain at lower fore-edge.

London: John Murray, 1818. First edition. leather_bound. Contemporary gilt decorated full calf rebacked with most of original spine laid-down. Very good.. 498 pages. 26 x 21 cm. Thirteen plates, one colored by hand and large fold-out frontispiece map, plus half title and publisher adverts. An Irish born English naval officer captured by the French on a voyage from St. Helena in 1805, he suffered an imprisonment of nearly nine years. Promoted to rank of commander in 1814, he was later assigned to lead an expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816 to learn if there was a connection between the Congo and Niger basins. Most of the crew including Tuckey succumbed to tropical fever or exhaustion and died in their efforts. Whereas the expedition failed it inspired interest by the British to continue African exploration. Full page engraving of ship at sea by Boner, frontispiece portrait of Saar, title page in black and red, one leaf with two engravings, 12 engravings in the text, floriated chapter head designs. First published 1662, this an enlarged edition. Saar was employed as a mercenary for the East India Company, spending 15 years in South East Asia, including Indonesia and Ceylon. He died at age 38 in the battle of Mogersdorf. Most of Saar's descriptions relate to Ceylon. The publisher also added other contemporary accounts to help authenticate Saar's accounts. Scattered text toning, ex-library stamp effaced from head of title page, title page slightly chipped fore-edge and foot, dampstain lower corners M-M4.
