Whittier was perhaps best known for his Anti-Slavery position early in the 19th century, and as a founding member of the "Anti-Slavery Society," in 1833. He was also strongly supportive of women writers: Sara Orne Jewett, Alice Cary, Celia Thaxter and others; Jewel dedicated one of her books to him. Elegant binding, raised bands, spine labels richly gilt with large floral motif at center, miniscule rubbing to a few corners.
