He was a contemporary of Gillray and Rowlandson, "a designer of humorous subjects and caricatures.....he obtained the praise of Sir Joshua Reynolds." [see: BRYAN, Vol.I, p.209]. Figure with wolf's head says: "Gentleman the Bank is mine. & I will open every Night at the same hour." Chair inscriptions read "John Shuffler" and Sir Grey Parolle quips, "I want a new Master." Most of the players shout "HUZZA." Bright, clean print, colors vivid.

Note below standing figures, " Cure for Gambling Published by Lord Kenyon in the Court of Kings Bench on May 9th 1796." Lord Kenyon was considered an excellent judge who suffered from an "excess of zeal" in moral issues. Gaming was very popular for the aristocratic class of women, and here Lady Buckinghamshire, her short petticoat esposes her fat legs and Lady Archer are pummeled with tomatoes and trash by the public Chip at top left corner, adhesions on verso margins, small hole center right margin.

The Duke of Bedford [Identified in the House of Lords Gillray Collection as Mr Norton.] stands directed to the right., his head in profile, on a mound watching a race. He wears riding-dress with spurred top-boots and holds a riding-switch. Three horses race in the background; the contours of the ground, and the horizon, are fringed with crowds of tiny cheering figures; some follow the race on foot or horseback.
