Henry Altemus. G/NONE. circa 1899. edition info missing. Hardcover; Printing info missing. Rated in only good condition due to the title page and free rear endpaper being removed. Also due to the title/copyright page being removed, the frontispiece which shows an oval engraving of Holmes became completely separated. It has recently been attached back in by what looks like magic tape. Both front and rear covers have gold and white flower designs on two-thirds each with the other quarter part having embossed flower medallions also glued on the covers. The glued medallion paper is missing from the rear cover. All corners and spine edges have a bit of bumping and open wear from handling and usage all these years. Endpapers are white with green illustrations and the Henry Altemus insignia. Also, the front side of the frontispiece has a previous owner's name neatly written in pencil and dated Sept 15, 1908, last name could be Flute or Plute or Hute, etc. Text is clean and tight. Paper over cardboard boards with pretty color illustration of child blowing bubbles, flowers, etc Quite a bit of smudgies and light staining. Open w ear and some damage all around edges. Gray cloth spine is OK but has some damage. Text is tight. Both hinges cracked almost all way through almost allowing boards to come off in one piece. Text is sta pled. All pages have natural browning fro cheap paper. Finger smudgies throughout along with some minor page tearing. All illustrations in shades of blue or green. Lettering in green. Milwaukee, Wisconsin: George Brumder. VG. 1880. no edition/printing given. Pre-1900 Hardcover. In very good condition considering age and usage. Tan covers with black lettering/details. A few small dark stains on covers with also very small open wear at outside cover corners and at spine edges. Very neat inked signature of Paul kress dated 1895 on front free endpaper. Text is really quite clean/tight with a couple of pages having a small tear or two. The few b/w engravings are still nice. All outsde page edges are red. My Old German knowledge is really not good, however I have been able to translate a few short stories and poems such as Das Haus (the house) , Der Dachs (the badger) , Die Bieme (the bee).
