Rare Books from

Interview with George Kalogeris of

When did you get started in bookselling?
Lime many, I have been in love with reading from an early age and decided to move into bookselling partly as a way to learn and hone certain online and e-commerce skills but also partly to share literature I have loved and interesting books I have found. I have been selling offline through mail, email and locally for over 20 years.
What drew you to bookselling?
As I mentioned, a love of books originally plus a desire to learn new business skills. But I also went from collector to bookseller because I was looking at books more than reading and thought "let me try to sell a few of these things taking up room in my garage".
Did you have any mentors in becoming a bookseller?
Not personal mentors but certainly many people I have learned form, especially the Aherns at Quill and Brush.
What are your specialties as a dealer?
I own a good collection of signed science-fiction, horror, and fantasy books.
What's the most amazing book you've ever sold?
First thing that comes to mind but it's not a book but a comic: Amazing Fantasy 14 which was the issue before Spiderman appeared for the first time in Amazing Fantasy 15. So close!
What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?
Opening and reading a few lines form each book I catalogue.
Do you have an open storefront or have you in the past?
No, always through mail or is the site I have today.
If so, do/did you have any bookstore pets?
What do you personally like to read? Collect?
I have varied tastes and it depends on my mood really but anything from good science fiction to philosophy, religion, biographies and modern classics.
What's your favorite book you personally own? Would you sell it, if the price were right?
Probably Love is a Dog From Hell by Bukowski. Yes...
What one book would you buy if price were no object?
So many! Don't fence me in!
If you were stranded on a desert island and could bring three books, what would they be?
Again so many! Today that would be: Any writings on the Buddha, Van Gogh's letters, Roberston Davies Deptford Trilogy. Ask me again tomorrow and the answer will be different!
