Description:
Westminster, MD: Heritage Books. New. 2010. Trade Paperback. 247 pages. Gist, Virginia agent to the Ohio Land Company, was the first person to provide a written description, in English, based on his observations of the Dayton area in 1751. This Miami Valley area was considered an earthly paradise; however, through continuous conflicts over land possession between settlers and Indians, it came to be known as the Miami slaughter-house by the close of the eighteenth century. The authors have gathered a wealth of information from conversations and correspondence with descendants of pioneers, historical texts, periodicals and Dayton academy records. Brief accounts of individual early settlers, including Daniel C. Cooper and Benjamin Van Cleve, provide insight into daily life in Dayton and offer an abundance of names and events. Individual buildings and locations are described in the context of the community. Chapters detailing the evolution of Dayton are grouped by date,…

Description:
Westminster, MD: Heritage Books. New. (1992) 2008. Trade Paperback. 216 pages. This volume is the third in a series, which attempts to piece together a substitute "census" for the early Montgomery County researcher. Most of the source material for these abstracts came from the Archives of Wright State University. The marriage records section of this book includes a list of names and denominations of the ministers who performed the rites. Election records give jurisdiction of a Justice of the Peace; knowing the township in which the Justice served may identify a family's location. Supreme Court records provide divorce petitions and other cases of genealogical interest. Deeds Recorded Late includes deeds which were not registered for many years, until the land was sold or divided among heirs, with 1816 selected as the cut-off date of an "early deed." Each section is arranged in chronological order. The every name index includes surname variations. .

Description:
Westminster, MD: Heritage Books. New. (1988) 2007. Paperback. 72 pages. In Ohio, the legal procedure of adopting children was authorized on 29 March 1859 by an act of the General Assembly. The first adoption in Franklin County occurred on 27 July 1859 when James Rice, aged three years, son of Jeremiah and Mary Ann Rice, was adopted by John J. and Lydia Wilson. For the period of 1859 through 1901, there were approximately three hundred and forty adoptions in Franklin County, Ohio. All of these appear in the Probate Court Journals and most of them appear in the Probate Court Complete Record as well. All of these records are available on microfilm or as originals at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus. The abstracts included in this compilation identify the adoptees, the natural and adoptive parents, the adoptee's new name if the name was changed, and the date of the adoption. A reference code identifies the source where the complete record can be found if desired. *** On 26 January…

Description:
Heritage Books, Inc.. New. (1996) 2010. Trade Paperback. 236 pages. The author's search for his wife's German ancestors turned into this collection of known first-generation German immigrants to Marion County, Ohio. In order to be included in this study one had to have emigrated from a German-speaking region of Europe between 1823 and 1900, and lived in Marion County for a time. The study does not include those who migrated from eastern states two or three generations after the initial emigration from Europe. Here, Mr. Potts has compiled an alphabetical list of immigrantswhen possible headed by the German spelling of their name, but accompanied by other various Americanized spellings which he was able to establishwhich includes such data as the immigrant's date and place of birth, parents' names, spouse's name, and date and place of marriage. Ancestors of the immigrants are listed alphabetically in the second part of the book. The author's intent is to…

Description:
Heritage Books. New. (1988) 2009. Trade Paperback. 227 pages. Green County, Ohio, was created in 1803 and is part of the vast area once known as the North West Territory. Although probate and land records begin with the creation of the county, civil recording of births did not begin until 1869. There is thus a lack of any central source for this vital information over the first sixty-six years of the county's history. This volume attempts to correct the situation by bringing together records of births prior to 1869 as culled from a multitude of sources. While much of the data has been taken from secondary sources such as family and county histories, cemetery inscriptions, and obituaries, a great deal of the information has been taken from original sources recorded at about the time of the birth, such as Bible records and church records. Thus, this volume should be of great use to genealogical and historical researchers interested in the Greene County area. Entries are arranged…

Description:
Bowie: Heritage Books. New. 2000. Reprint. Paperback. 2 volumes. . 740 pages. Seneca County is centrally located in northern Ohio, just southwest of Lake Erie. Although the Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolution, it threw this region of the Ohio country into chaos as bands of Indians supplied with British arms attacked settlements all over the frontier. After an introductory chapter culminating in the expedition of Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne against the warring tribes, the text expands on the social, ecclesiastical, academic and industrial development of the county from the War of 1812 through July, 1880. The text is replete with biographical sketches of notable citizens, professional men, clergy, teachers, lawyers, judges and politicians, often noting family members and accompanied by portraits. Chapters cover a diverse array of topics including: the Battle of the Thames; the death of Tecumsah; wars between the Wyandots and the Senecas; early settlers; killin…

In most cases, an accurate date of birth is available for the child, and frequently the name of a parent(s) or guardian is provided along with places of residence. ...An index to all the indentured children follows the abstracts.
