Description:
1890. Translated from the French by A. Estoclet. Illustrated by George Roux. New York: Cassell Publishing Company, n.d. [1890]. Original light blue cloth pictorially decorated in black. First American Edition (also the first edition in English). Quoting from a contemporary review (cited in T&M) -- Like most of M. Jules Verne's books, it is the story of a journey. Some acrobats wish to travel from California to their native France, and having no money they determine to go in their caravan northward to Bering's Straits, crossing on the ice, and make their way through Siberia into Europe. M. Jules Verne's travellers are generally successful: in spite of robbers, icebergs, and the Russian police, the bold Frenchmen triumphantly reach their goal. Pictured on the front cover is the troupe with their horse-drawn wagon climbing into the Sierras, while the spine shows one of them fleeing a grizzly bear. This undated American edition (CAESAR) was published sometime in the autumn of 1890, probably late… Read More

Description:
1930. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1930. Original green cloth, with dust jacket. First Edition of this tale of mystery and adventure, published a month before the American. As Buchan points out in a brief prefatory note, this tale contains further exploits of Dickson McCunn and several other characters whom he had introduced in HUNTINGTOWER (1922); there would be one more Dickson McCunn novel, THE HOUSE OF THE FOUR WINDS, in 1935. This is a near-fine copy; the attractive pictorial dust jacket is just about near-fine, with quite minor soil and edge-wear. Blanchard A87.

Description:
1883. Edited with Preface and Notes by Julian Hawthorne. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1883. 12 pp ads dated Sept 1882. Original grey cloth decorated in black and blue. First English Edition (simultaneous with the American, both published in December 1882). Hawthorne worked on this in 1860-1861, but then put it down and never completed (or felt satisfied with) it; it is considered to be one of Hawthorne's most autobiographical tales, especially the central character himself, who like Hawthorne's childhood guardian is a spider-cultivating eccentric. After Hawthorne's death, this was the third and last of his unpublished manuscripts to be published by his heirs, following SEPTIMIUS FELTON (1872) and THE DOLLIVER ROMANCE (1876). This copy is in near-fine condition (just a touch of wear at the spine ends). This English edition is much scarcer than the simultaneous American edition. Clark A31.2; Blanck 7642.

Description:
1958. London: Jonathan Cape, (1958). Original black cloth (with silhouette of dancing woman in dark brown) lettered in silver, with dust jacket. First Edition of the sixth James Bond thriller -- in which Bond travels to a fictional Caribbean island to investigate the disappearance of two MI6 agents. This was the first 007 book to be filmed (in 1962), in which Sean Connery made his debut as "007". This copy does have the front-cover silhouette of Honeychile Rider (who in the film was Honey Ryder, played by Ursula Andress). The front cover of some copies is plain black -- which is considered to be the first state, although there is no known priority of issue between the two. This volume is in close-to-fine condition (a few faint scratches on the rear cover, spine slightly aslant); the silver lettering on the spine remains very bright. The dust jacket, still with its "13s.6d.net" price, is near-fine as well -- essentially no external wear or soil at all, with a faint ink-stamp on the front flap… Read More

Description:
1874. With Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1874. Original deep red pebble-grain cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, board edges beveled, all page edges gilt. First English Edition (and first fully-illustrated edition in the English language) of these four tales, three of which are among Verne's earliest: "A Drama in the Air" (appeared in a periodical in 1851, his second story), "Master Zacharius" (1854, his fourth), and "A Winter amid the Ice" (1855, his fifth). Also included (of course) is "Dr. Ox's Experiment" from 1872 -- plus "Ascent of Mont Blanc" by Jules's brother Paul Verne. "Dr. Ox's Experiment" is a great tale: Doctor Ox and his assistant Ygene come to the small quiet community of Quiquendone located in Flanders. He promises to light this town with a network of oxyhydric gas pipes. During the construction of this network, the quiet community becomes quite excitable, to the point where they are ready to go to war against a neighboring… Read More

Description:
1875. With Numerous Illustrations. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875. Original terra-cotta cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled. First American fully-illustrated edition, from the sheets of the first British edition. These four tales include three that are among Jules Verne's earliest: "A Drama in the Air" (appeared in a periodical in 1851, his second story), "Master Zacharius" (1854, his fourth), and "A Winter amid the Ice" (1855, his fifth); "Dr. Ox's Experiment" itself did not appear until 1872. (Also included is "Ascent of Mont Blanc" by his brother Paul Verne.) Osgood had published the first edition in English in mid-1874, in a small unillustrated volume. William F. Gill of Boston published the first American (somewhat-) illustrated edition, dated 1874, under the title FROM THE CLOUDS TO THE MOUNTAINS. Then this copiously-illustrated Osgood edition came out in mid-1875, priced at a hefty $3.00. The front cover shows Master Zacharius raising the trap door in the floor… Read More

Description:
1897. New York: Dodd Mead and Company, 1897. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in black and red. First Edition of this tale, based on fact, of the foiling of a robbery of the Kansas and Arizona Railroad; in 1926 it was made into a Tom Mix western. This copy is of the first issue, with the word "Train" omitted from the title page -- the binding reads THE GREAT K & A TRAIN ROBBERY; this important word was restored in subsequent printings. The attractive binding shows two oncoming steam engines; this copy is just about fine (a couple of small faint spots on the rear cover, frontispiece tissue torn). Blanck 6213; Glover & Greene 181; see Johnson p. 33, where he says "'The Great K. & A. Train Robbery'.... is one of the really good detective stories.

Description:
1905. Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, n.d. [1905]. Original tan cloth decorated in green and red. First Edition of this mystery, issued as a volume in Bobbs-Merrill's "Pocket Book" series. The narrator stops to spend the night on "a dark and stormy night," in a big house in rural western Pennsylvania -- where the gentleman at the door seems to be expecting him. This is a near-fine copy (volume slightly askew, but virtually no wear or soil). In our experience this is a scarcer Green title than others published by Bobbs-Merrill at about the same time.

1935. London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1935). Original green cloth, with dust jacket. First English Edition, published two days after the American. This is the third and last mystery featuring Dickson McCunn (the two previous ones had been HUNTINGTOWER (1922) and CASTLE GAY (1930). This suspenseful tale takes place in the imaginary European nation of Evallonia; McCunn encounters (among others) "the man with the elephant." This is a fine, bright copy; the pictorial dust jacket is near- fine, remarkably complete (light foxing as usual; one closed tear with tape on the back-side). Blanchard A111.

Description:
1936. London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1936). Original green cloth, with dust jacket. First British Edition, published two days after the American edition which was titled THE MAN FROM THE NORLANDS. This was the fifth and last of Buchan's Richard Hannay mysteries, following THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS (1915), GREENMANTLE (1916), MR STANDFAST (1919) and THE THREE HOSTAGES (1924). (It is not to be confused with Buchan's 1919 book that also bears the title THE ISLAND OF SHEEP, by "Cadmus and Harmonia," pseudonyms for Buchan and his wife, which is a symposium of political, economic and social issues.) THE ISLAND OF SHEEP is Johnnie Buchan's [JB's son's] book: dedicated to him, full of his enthusiasm for birds and for wild places, and with a thirteen-year-old boy, Dick Hannay's son, added to the cast... The Island of Sheep is a name for the Færoes, where he and Johnnie spent a fortnight in 1932. The plot involves happenings in a Rhodesian kraal, a Chinese jade tablet with a strange inscription... Description:
1886. Authorized Edition. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. 2 pp undated ads. Original yellow wrappers printed in black. First American Edition of this mystery by the noted Scottish novelist, poet and literary critic -- perhaps now best known for the twelve "Fairy Books" for children (1889-1910) that he adapted and edited. Lang's THE MARK OF CAIN is one of the earliest novels to feature, in a big way, tattoos -- a man has his body tattooed exactly like someone else's, then kills that man and impersonates him in order to claim his inheritance. (Along the same vein, two years later H. Rider Haggard wrote MR. MEESON'S WILL, in which a critical will is tattooed upon a woman's body.) THE MARK OF CAIN also involves, in a smaller way, a "flying machine" -- and thus is science fiction for its time. This copy is bound in yellow wrappers, which was Scribner's less-expensive option (to hard-bound cloth) during the 1880s. It is in remarkably near-fine condition (very light soil, but scarcely any wear);… Read More

Description:
1907. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head / New York: John Lane Company, 1907. 2 pp undated ads. Original green-grey cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of this "motorised detective story" [Quayle]. All of Colonel Mauleverer's sons are being murdered, each a month apart, and each left with a noose around his neck (though not the cause of death). A.C. Fox-Davies, a barrister who was an expert on heraldry, had recently had published his detective tale THE DANGERVILLE INHERITANCE, with many of the same characters as this one. As a note in this book indicates, he actually had written THE MAULEVERER MURDERS earlier, and its events precede the other's -- though the two books were published in reverse order. After these two detective novels, Fox-Davies "was then heard of no more" [Quayle again]. This copy is in the secondary binding, just like the first but with the cover design all in black (no orange). The condition of this attractively-bound book is near-fine -- the only flaw of note… Read More

1868. With Many Illustrations. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1868. 2 pp preliminary undated ads. Original purple-brown cloth. First American (and first illustrated) Edition of this classic of detective fiction, issued in the same year as the London three-decker. THE MOONSTONE marked the end of Collins's peak period as a novelist: it was preceded by THE WOMAN IN WHITE (1860), NO NAME (1862) and ARMADALE (1866), and was followed by a transition into sensation or propaganda fiction -- especially regarding marriage and inheritance laws. Commenting on T.S. Eliot's opinion of this book ("the first, the longest, and the best of detective novels"), John Carter wrote Mr. Eliot is inaccurate in his first adjective, a little rash perhaps in his second, but unlikely to meet with much disagreement over his third. If Poe created the short detective story, Wilkie Collins is the undisputed father of the full-length variety... The American edition includes 66 wood engravings interspersed throughout the text. 1870. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1870. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 4+4 pp terminal ads dated Oct 1870. Original yellow-brown pictorial wrappers. Early (second) American edition, published in late September, about three weeks after Fields Osgood's edition -- and about three months after Dickens's death in June left this tale unfinished. The front cover illustration, the same as appeared on the six UK parts, was the work of Charles A. Collins -- Dickens's son-in-law, and Wilkie's brother; the scenes shown formed the basis for the numerous attempts, after Dickens's death, to complete or "solve" the mystery. Harper had been serializing DROOD in parts, as a monthly Dickens supplement to their Harper's Weekly (but Fields Osgood had earlier paid Dickens an advance for book publication). The Harper serialization -- as well as the fact that this Harper edition came out only in wrappers -- probably explains why Harper's edition is so scarce today: many of their readers had already read the tale serially. Description:
1935. London...: Cassell and Company, (1935). Original dark blue cloth with spine lettered in gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition of this collection of eight cases solved by Father Brown, the diminutive Roman Catholic priest / amateur detective. This was the fifth and last collection of Father Brown cases, preceded by THE INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN (1911), THE WISDOM... (1914), THE INCREDULITY... (1926), and THE SECRET... (1927); Chesterton died the year after this one was published. ...It was in his series of Father Brown stories that Chesterton gave life to one of the most famous and best-loved of fictional detectives... The little Roman Catholic priest's main preoccupation is with the moral and religious aspects of the crimes he is solving, rather than the apprehension of the criminal and the administration of legal punishment. With his psychological approach to the problems of human frailty, and his endowment of the guilty with good as well as bad qualities, Chesterton's works of detective… Read More
