Description:
1892. London: Chatto & Windus, 1892. Original very dark blue cloth, beveled. First Edition (English -- published on the same day as the American). This volume consists largely of Stevenson's thoughts as he journeyed by train in 1879 from New York to San Francisco, in pursuit of the American woman he had recently met on the Continent (and who was to become his wife). Also included are his subsequent impressions of the city of Monterey. This is a near-fine copy (endpapers cracking, but scarcely any other wear); the front paste-down bears the small leather bookplate of Clara & Irwin Strasburger. Beinecke 546; Princeton 48.

Description:
1903. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1903. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition, first binding (some copies were put up in a green Times Book Club binding). As the Boer War wound down in 1901, Buchan received a two-year appointment to assist Lord Milner in the reconstruction of the Colony. Buchan, who had not been enthusiastic about the war, believing that the British, on balance, 'were only just in the right,' was enthusiastic about the reconstruction and entirely in sympathy with Milner's objectives. [Smith] This is Buchan's survey of the situation in South Africa after the war, with his thoughts about what should be done next. Included are two large foldout color maps -- one of "South Africa" and one of "The New Colonies." The volume is bright and near-fine (very slightly rubbed at the extremities). Blanchard A15 (citing only one foldout map, not two).

Description:
1842. First American Edition. New-York: J. Winchester, Publisher, November 1842. Original self-wrappers, bound into very early plain blue wrappers. "First American Edition" -- second impression. As first put forth in a 1975 article by Peter Bracher and (soon) to be confirmed in Walter Smith's upcoming bibliography, this edition (12-1/2 cents) was published at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 7, 1842 -- just TWO HOURS before the "Brother Jonathan Extra" edition (12-1/2 cents) managed to get out on the streets. Harper got its edition (12-1/2 cents) out by early or mid-afternoon on the following day (Tuesday the 8th), and Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia had an edition (first 25 cents, then 12-1/2) on the streets by Wednesday the 9th. (L&B was the only one of these American publishers to have had a prior agreement with Dickens for publication in America -- but Dickens was so upset by the lack of an international copyright law, he forewent any such negotiations -- which is why none of these publishers had… Read More

Description:
1842. Boz' Works -- No. 21. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1842. Original self-wrapper (serving as title page); lacking the rear wrapper. Fourth American Edition (just two days after the first!) -- second issue. As first put forth in a 1975 article by Peter Bracher and soon to be confirmed in Walter Smith's upcoming bibliography, this edition was published on November 9th, 1842 (two days after Winchester's "New World" edition and Wilson's "Brother Jonathan" edition -- and one day after Harper's edition). Dickens was so upset by the lack of an international copyright law, he forewent any negotiations with American publishers -- which is why none of these publishers had advance sheets, and all simply had to wait in the harbor for the first boat to arrive with copies of the UK edition (published October 19th), and then rush to press. This Lea and Blanchard edition has 103 pages of double-column text -- actually 107 pages, because inserted between pages 88 and 89 are the two leaves containing pages… Read More

Description:
1890. Literary Reminiscences, Methods of Work, and Advice to Young Beginners, personally contributed by Leading Authors of the Day. Compiled and Edited by George Bainton. London: James Clarke & Co., 1890. 8 pp ads dated "1/6/90". Original royal blue cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Edition of this compendium of advice on becoming an author, by the leading writers of the day. Henty's contribution is on pages 19-21; he ends with: My advice to boys who want to become authors is this: Write a story and get some person in whose judgment you have confidence to give you his opinion frankly whether there is any promise in it. If he says no, give the thing up altogether. If he says yes, and you really feel that you have a talent for telling stories, and find that your stories are liked by your schoolfellows, then write, and write, and write. Burn all you write, for until you are two or three and twenty you will certainly not write anything worth reading... This copy is fine except for some cracking… Read More

Description:
1923. With Illustrations. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1923. Original tan cloth pictorially decorated in black, green, and red. First American Edition. This is a retelling of a dozen true historical events that involved "escapes and hurried journeys" all over the world (Scotland, South Africa, Turkestan, Australia...), illustrated with eight plates by A.S. Forrest. The book was subsequently reprinted as a text-book, with additional questions and exercises not by Buchan. This is a handsomely bound book: the four-color pictorial scene wraps around from the front cover onto the spine. A fine copy, remarkably clean, virtually as new except for faint evidence of a small book-label on the front endpaper. See Blanchard A54 (note).

Description:
1921. [both vols. inscribed by Charmian] Illustrated with Photographs. New York: The Century Co., 1921. Original green cloth. First Edition of Charmian London's personal biography, copiously illustrated with photographic plates, of her husband who had died five years earlier. Quoting from her Preface, Here I give to the world my Jack London -- a virile creature compounded of curiosity and fearlessness, the very texture of fine sensibility, the loving heart and discerning intuitions of a woman, an ardent brain, and a divine belief in himself. And since he was first and foremost his own man, I render... also his own Jack London. This set is in very good-plus condition, with minor rubbing at the extremities and (as usual) the spine gilt rather dull. The front free endpaper of each volume is inscribed and signed by Charmian London to "Harry" Fish (her quotation marks) -- in Glen Ellen California in 1935. Vol I reads "Wishing you could have known the man, and not only his humble biographer --". Her Vol… Read More

Description:
1868. London: Virtue & Co., 1868. Original bright green cloth. First Edition of this collection of eight pieces on outdoor "sports and pastimes" -- namely horse-racing, hunting, shooting (birds), fishing, yachting, rowing, alpine climbing and cricket. All had appeared, between December 1867 and August 1868, in Saint Paul's Magazine, of which Trollope was editor. Trollope himself wrote only the piece "On Hunting" (as well as the Preface for this book); two of the others, "On Rowing" and "On Alpine Climbing," were by Leslie Stephen -- who in 14 years would become the father of Virginia Woolf. "No other item in Trollopiana appears in so many different clothes without the indication of there having been earlier issues" [Sadleir]; this was due in part to the fact that Virtue & Co. soon went under and its books were bought out by Strahan & Co., which in turn was bought out by Daldy, Isbister & Co. This, however, is a copy from the first issue, with a Virtue & Co. title page dated 1868 and with "Virtue &… Read More

1889. May 31, 1889. Notes, Addresses, Letters, Telegrams. Edited by Horace L. Traubel. Philadelphia: David McKay, 1889. Original maroon cloth. First Edition of this group of writings, by Whitman and others, upon the occasion of the "Complimentary Dinner" held in his honor in Camden on May 31, 1889 -- his 70th birthday (he would have only two more). The three Whitman pieces making their first appearance here are his own lengthy "Autobiographic Note" (page 4), his brief response at the dinner (page 5), and Whitman's own advertisement for his books (complete with mailing address for sending funds "to W.W.'s order" (page 74). Quoting about half of his response: My friends, though announc'd to give an address, there is no such intention... I have obeyed the command to come and look at you, for a minute, and show myself; which is probably the best I can do... All I have felt the imperative conviction to say I have already printed in my books of poems or prose... And so, hail and farewell. Deeply… Read More

1865. [the E.R. Hoar / Doheny copy] Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1865. 24 pp ads dated Dec 1864. Original blind-stamped purple cloth with gilt-decorated spine. First Edition, first printing, which consisted of only 2,000 or 2,040 copies (of which some were sent to England to be issued with a cancel title page) -- printed in December 1864, but not actually published until late March 1865. Edited by the younger William Ellery Channing and by Thoreau's sister Sophia, this was the fifth Thoreau book, preceded by A WEEK ON THE CONCORD AND MERRIMACK RIVERS, WALDEN, and the posthumous EXCURSIONS and THE MAINE WOODS. There were four different bindings used (differing in blind-stamping and in "author of" spine verbiage), and in seven different colors and grains of cloth -- without known priority; this copy is in Blanck's "binding A," and is in purple "Z" (triangular-grain) cloth. This is a bright, near-fine copy (a trace of wear at the spine ends); the spine has generally browned -- as is typical for this… Read More

Description:
1908. Private Correspondence. Edited by George Pierce Baker. Boston: The Bibliophile Society, 1908. Original grey paper boards with parchment spine and corners, in original two-piece slipcase with spine label. First Edition, limited to 493 copies for Bibliophile Society members only (preceding the so-called "Bixby Edition" of the same year). Maria Beadnell, the first love of the young Charles Dickens during the years 1830-1833 (her father prevented the match), became the model for Dora in DAVID COPPERFIELD; in 1855 she contacted him and they secretly met without their spouses, but Dickens, surprised at how much she had changed, subsequently based the less-than-flattering Flora Finching of LITTLE DORRIT upon her. This is an as-new copy, in the original two-part slipcase (which has some wear at one corner). Podeschi D164.

Description:
1898. London: Blackie & Son, 1898. 1 preliminary page undated ads. Original deep red cloth. First Edition, being a volume in the publisher's "Victorian Era Series." In late 1896 Gissing was invited, by his old college friend John Holland Rose, to contribute a monograph on Dickens for a new series of volumes to be published by the Glasgow publisher Blackie & Son (Rose was to be general editor of the series). Gissing readily accepted, and spent much of the first half of 1897 re-reading Dickens novels; in July Blackie announced the series, and shortly thereafter Gissing left his second wife for good, fleeing to Italy where he actually wrote CHARLES DICKENS (published in February 1898). This copy is in the primary state, with the publisher's name at the foot of the spine and with the preliminary ad leaf listing on the recto four titles (including this one) as "Ready", and on the verso eight titles "In preparation." (Later states have no publisher's imprint on the spine, and have either of two later… Read More

Description:
1854. Boston: Jenks, Hickling & Swan, 1854. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines. Early American edition, just possibly the first complete one. Since Harper published the two volumes of its edition separately in March 1853 and in March 1854 (so dated on the title pages), it is considered to be the first American edition. The date in 1854 when these two Boston volumes were published is unknown, so it is possible that this two-volume Boston edition came out earlier in 1854 than Harper's second volume. Jenks Hickling & Swan was a very "fluid" enterprise at the time, such that their 1856 and 1857 two-volumes-in-one printings would be by Hickling Swan & Brown, and their 1861 two-in-one printing would be by Swan Brewer & Tileston. This set is in very good-plus condition (a few small holes in the cloth, mainly at extremities or at joints); the gilt on the spines is unusually bright. Smith pp 116-119; Carr (UTexas) B500 (in blue cloth); not cited by Podeschi. Provenance: both… Read More

Description:
1870. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1870. 4+8 pp terminal ads, undated. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First Edition of this schoolbook written by Trollope, issued as the fourth volume in the "Ancient Classics for English Readers" series. As Sadleir explains: since this book was often reprinted without changing anything but the ad leaves, the vital characteristics of a true first edition is that the book include at least two leaves (four pages) of ads, and that nowhere in the book is there mention of any more than the three previously-published volumes in the series. This copy has the standard four pages of ads, plus an additional eight pages of ads of Blackwood's educational works; both on the half-title verso, and in the ads, only the three earlier titles are cited. It is a very good-plus copy, with minor ruffling at the spine ends. Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 35.

Description:
1812. Illustrated by Engravings. Edinburgh: Printed by John Brown, for Bell & Bradfute, Edinburgh, W. Anderson, Stirling, and Thomas Hamilton, London, 1812. Original drab paper-covered boards with plain green cloth spine. First Edition of the first "critique" of the poems of Robert Burns, which though anonymous was written by George Gleig (1753-1840), Bishop of Brechin and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church. This was the first, and for a long time the only book exclusively concerned with Burns's poetry. Its appearance twelve years after the first collected edition, and fifteen years after the first biography, points to an order of priority in Burns studies which has seldom changed: there has been a time lag between interest in the man and editorial scholarship, and a longer one between editing and criticism. The author of the CRITIQUE pointed out that his aim was to satisfy a demand for guidance on the part "of the country gentleman, the farmer, the artisan, and all those who have moved in the… Read More

1860. [London: St. Luke's Hospital, 1860.] Original pale pink wrappers. First Edition, second and usual issue -- with the final paragraph in bold (not like the rest of the text), with the wrapper pink (not mauve -- though all are today faded), with the front cover title followed by a comma (not by a period), and with the front cover border decorative only at the corners (not all 'round). Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital ("established in 1751, for the treatment and care of lunatics"), and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there (dancing around the Christmas tree). He actually wrote the original piece in 1852, at which time it appeared in his Household Words (Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913, when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up). It is here published in book form for the first time, eight years later, when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The… Read More

1919. London: Macmillan and Co., 1919. Original blue cloth geometrically decorated in gilt (in orange on the spine), with dust jacket. First English Edition of this collection of essays, which consisted of 1500 copies -- slightly changed from the 1912 American edition (one essay dropped, another added, new Preface). He writes (for example) about meeting fellow student J.M. Synge for the first time and thereafter, and about putting on plays in a small town in the west of Ireland. As Yeats says in his Preface, he wrote the majority of these essays "during the ten years after 1902"... During those years I wrote little verse and no prose that did not arise out of some need of the Irish players... I was busy with a single art, that of a small, unpopular theatre; and this art may well seem... of no more account than the shaping of an agate... This volume, with its handsome geometric design by T. Sturge Moore (initialed), is in fine condition; included is the uncommon dust jacket, in very good condition… Read More

1900. [the only appearance?] Published Weekly. Vol LII / No. 2713. New York: Thursday, November 29, 1900 ("the last Thanksgiving of the nineteenth century"). 20 pp preliminary ads (paginated i-xx), plus 16 pp terminal ads (paginated xxi-xxxvi). Original white wrappers stamped in yellow-orange. Early appearance (apparently the first outside of several Australian newspapers) of this four-page double-column article on the granting of British officers' commissions, written during the Boer War. Henty reviews the history of how officers' commissions were bought and sold over past centuries (a practice ended in 1871) -- though he says there were benefits to that system, such as a retiring officer being able to sell his commission to someone else, "a sort of bounty to induce him to get out!" [Dartt]. Henty also argues for abolishing the Victoria Cross (or at least limiting it to non-commissioned ranks), because too many officers are dying in heroic but ill-advised efforts to earn it. This is a near-fine… Read More

1916. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1916. [Together, four volumes.] Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Editions, being the American copyright issues -- consisting of only 70 copies each, published separately between October 18th and 30th, 1916. Each volume consists of Kipling's account of specific sea warfare, preceded by an original poem written for the occasion (including Vol I's "Have you news of my boy Jack?"). As with THE FRINGES OF THE FLEET, Kipling wrote these articles with the permission of the British Admiralty, for appearance in British and American newspapers; he ceded copyright so that they could be used for propaganda purposes. Two months later they were all collected in Kipling's book SEA WARFARE. All four volumes are in fine, clean condition (the usual minor rusting of the staples). Richards A287; Stewart 402.
