Description:
New York: Fritz Eichenberg, 1943. The first of 2 wood engravings of Abraham Lincoln that was created by Fritz Eichenberg. Signed in pencil by the artist for "Howie & Bobbie." I think this image is superior to the later one--it certainly is more scarce. In a 1968 letter from Lincolniana collector Frank J. Williams, Eichenberg is quoted: "I did my first Lincoln, the three quarters profile, in the middle of the second World War, to remind my friends of the great heart of Lincoln, who, in his Gettysburg address, exhorted his country to be magnanimous and bind up the wounds of a war of brother against brother.... Lincoln represents the best America has ever produced, a man of, for, and by the people in the truest sense--great and humble, with a sense of humor and deep compassion.... If you look closely, you will notice that I engraved two little crosses reflected in his sad eyes--he knew suffering.". SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Fine. Illus. by Fritz Eichenberg. Fine Art Print.

Description:
Worcester, Massachusetts: Leonard Worcester, 1793. 346, 84 pages. David Brainerd was a missionary among Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and near Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1746 he published the first portion of his diaries about his experiences. After Brainerd died of tuberculosis at Edwards' home in 1748, Edwards edited and published the remaining portions of the diaries. This Worcester edition reprinted both. The book was recently and sympathetically rebound in full dark brown morocco with a red title patch, new but not obtrusive endpapers, and appropriate blind tooling. The first and last few leaves are browned and tender along the edges; the remaining pages are lightly tanned but quite supple. There is a triangle of faint waterstaining in the margins of many pages. Much nicer than it sounds--a better than acceptable copy of two important pieces of Americana (Wright Howes E56 and B717).. Early Printing. Hardcover. Description:
New York: Harper's Weekly, 1865. 16 pages. Large folio (16 inches by 11 1/4 inches). Harper's Weekly was the most important American pictorial newspaper in the 19th century. Because the original wood engravings in virtually every issue are highly collectible, complete issues are becoming more difficult to obtain. The issue offered here focuses on Lincoln's inauguration following his 1864 reelection. It includes the complete text of his famous "with malice toward none" speech and an editorial lauding the speech. The front page includes a full-page wood engraving after a photograph by Alexander Gardner, with the caption "President Lincoln Taking the Oath at His Second Inauguration, March 4, 1865." The centerfold is a double-page wood engraving (also after a Gardner photo) entitled "President Lincoln's Reinauguration at the Capitol." In addition to those picturing the inauguration, there are many other engravings, including, most notably, a full-page engraving depicting African-American soldiers,… Read More

Description:
Bremen, Germany: A. D. Geisler, 1862. Original lithographed folding map. The image is 13 1/4 inches by 19 1/2 inches on a sheet that measures 18 inches by 22 1/4 inches. This map is similar to (perhaps inspired by) Panorama of the seat of war : bird's eye view of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia published by John Bachmann in Baltimore in 1861. Both are semi-topographical birds-eye views of the region, but there are differences, not the least of which is that only this Geisler map is oriented with North being at the bottom of the map. My best guess is that Geisler produced the map for sale to people in Germany who had a keen interest in the American Civil War. The map does not show troop movements or anything else military; it appears to be intended to give the Germans a picture of the territory where the war was taking place. This map is quite scarce, with copies located only in the Library of Congress and the Maryland State Archives. Only one other dealer has a… Read More
