Description:
Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, 1844. Folio (18 3/8 inches by 14 1/2 inches) print from the third and final folio edition. The print is in excellent condition, with vivid coloring and none of the foxing frequently seen (see the Smithsonian's copy, for example). There are some smudges in the margins--well away from the image; there is one very small chip out of the bottom right corner in the margin and one 1/2" closed tear on the bottom edge. It is appropriate that McKenney and Hall identified this leader as "The Orator" because the Winnebago called themselves "Hochungra," which translates as "People of the Big Voice." Oratory was highly valued by tribe members, and it was natural that they would send their best orator to speak for them in negotiations in Washington.. Third Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Charles Bird King. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Fine Art Print.

Description:
Worcester, Massachusetts: Leonard Worcester, 1793. 346, 84 pages. David Brainerd was a missionary among Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and near Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1746 he published the first portion of his diaries about his experiences. After Brainerd died of tuberculosis at Edwards' home in 1748, Edwards edited and published the remaining portions of the diaries. This Worcester edition reprinted both. The book was recently and sympathetically rebound in full dark brown morocco with a red title patch, new but not obtrusive endpapers, and appropriate blind tooling. The first and last few leaves are browned and tender along the edges; the remaining pages are lightly tanned but quite supple. There is a triangle of faint waterstaining in the margins of many pages. Much nicer than it sounds--a better than acceptable copy of two important pieces of Americana (Wright Howes E56 and B717).. Early Printing. Hardcover. Taos, New Mexico: Anna Barry, 1946. Original serigraph/ silkscreen print, signed and titled in pencil by the artist. The image is 5 inches by 7 1/4 inches on a sheet that is 6 inches by 8 1/2 inches. The Taos Pueblo people have lived in New Mexico more than 1000 years. The serigraph portrays Taos Pueblo male dancers performing a traditional ceremonial dance in which men wear simulated horsetails--they originally wore real horsetails! The serigraph is by American painter and printmaker Anna Barry (1907-2001). With her husband and fellow artist Ira Moscowitz, she lived in Taos, New Mexico from 1944 until 1955. During that time she studied Native American cultures and produced a series of serigraphs and lithographs depicting those cultures. Among the U. S. art museums whose collections include Barry's serigraphs are the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. Description:
Boston, Massachusetts: Richard G. Badger, 1911. 76 pages. Rare book including photos of carved wooden statuary that were used as sidewalk advertising for cigar stores. The folk carvings included women, baseball players, policemen, etc., but the main emphasis was on native Americans--the proverbial "Cigar Store Indian." There is no credit given to photographer Jessie Tarbox Beals, but she was a friend of the author, and some of the images can be found in the Beals collection at the City Museum of New York. The book is clean and tight, with a bright cover with unrubbed gilded lettering and a small gilded taxi cab with a woman taking photos from a rear window. Corners and spine extremities are rubbed; pages lightly toned; 2 pages with short (less than 1/2 inch) closed tears. A nice copy of this highly sought after book.. First Edition. Hardcover. Manitou, Colorado: James Thurlow, 1870. Circa 1870s albumen landscape stereoview that includes a distant image of a Native American tepee with a horse and what appears to be a Native American man standing nearby. James Thomas Thurlow (1831-1878) was a British-born immigrant who had a photography studio in Manitou, Colorado during the 1870s. The stereoview is in very good condition: the image is clean and bright, on a mount that has very minor edgewear and soiling. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. The stereoview is in an envelope that Dennis used to circulate the view for comments from fellow amateur stereo photographers, who like Dennis were members of The Stereoscopic Society. Philadelphia: F. W. Greenough, 1836. Folio (18 3/4 inches by 14 1/4 inches) lithograph from the first folio edition. The print is in excellent condition, with very vivid hand-coloring and careful use of gum arabic to highlight the image. As usual there is some offsetting from text that appeared on the facing page, but it is relatively unobtrusive, and there is none of the foxing frequently seen. There is a very narrow line of glue residue along the binding edge--well away from the image. Neamathla (1750s-1841) was born into the Creek nation and at some point moved to Florida where he became an orator and one of the most influential Seminole chiefs. When he opposed the U. S. Government's "Removal" plan to move Creeks and Seminoles to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), he was deposed as chief by Florida Governor Duval and later was forced to walk the "trail of tears" to Indian Territory. Colorado Springs, Colorado: Byron H. Gurnsey, 1875. Original stereoview: albumen prints mounted on printed card stock. A rare and highly sought-after western stereoview showing a group of Ute males in front of the photographer's studio on Pike's Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs circa 1875. Most of the men are holding weapons; one of them has both a Maynard Carbine (the first one with a folding sight) and a Colt Model 1860 army revolver. This stereoview is from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Philadelphia: D. Rice & A.N. Hart, 1855. Original hand-colored lithograph by J. T. Bowen after the painting by Charles Bird King. Octavo (image size approximately 6" by 9") print from the 1855 octavo edition. The print is in very good condition, with vivid coloring and some relatively minor soiling of the off-white background. The print has been archivally matted and is ready for a standard 16" by 20" frame. To-Ka-Con (McKenney said that the name means "He that inflicts the first wound") was a Yankton Sioux Chief in what is now South Dakota. He was both a tribal policeman and a chief who signed several treaties on behalf of his tribe. Thomas L. McKenney, who from 1816 until 1830 headed what was to become the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, commissioned Charles Bird King to paint portraits of Native American delegates visiting Washington, D.C. Description:
Detroit, Michigan: Detroit Publishing Company, 1899. 6 3/4 inches by 9 inches. Famed western American photographer William Henry Jackson spent a great deal of time taking pictures of Native Americans. Late in his career, he formed a relationship with the Detroit Publishing Company and turned over to them thousands of his negatives as well as those of other Western photographers.. Some of those negatives were printed as photochroms, which are color lithographs produced from black and white photographs. The negative from which this photochrom was produced has been attributed to Denver photographer Charles A. Nast by both the National Gallery and the Amon Carter Museum. This photochrom of a Ute family is beautifully colored and is a respectful portrayal of the Native American culture. It is in excellent condition. [Note: Around 1910 the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) in Canada adapted the image into an almost ominous black and white printed postcard, and re-titled it, "A… Read More
