Saint Paul, Minnesota: Earle S. Goodrich, Territorial Printer, 1857. "Including the ORGANIC ACT OF THE TERRITORY with the Enabling Act of Congress, the Act of the Territorial Legislature Relative to the Convention, and the Vote of the People on the Constitution." xix, (3), 685 pages.  8vo.  Bound in the original 3/4 leather over marbled paper-covered boards.  First edition.  In 1857 Minnesota territorial politics reflected the intense national conflict between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, who were deeply divided over issues such as slavery and "state's rights."  When a convention to prepare a state constitution convened, Republican delegates and Democratic delegates met in different rooms and had separate debates.  Although they eventually did come together to write a common constitution, each party published its own record of the convention.  This is the Democratic record; the Republicans published their own in 1858. … Read More

Wolfe; covers brass-die stamped in 22-karat gold design by Daniel B. Bianchi and Selma Ordewer; all edges gilt; integral ribbon bookmark. Great Britain does not have a written constitution, and Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) was the first person to produce a comprehensive overview of British common law. Its influence was almost immediate and certainly immense, not only as a legal guide but as a literary document. The effect was profound not only in Britain but also in the United States--the U. S. New York: Unpublished, 1902. leather-bound scrapbook. 11 1/4 inches by 14 inches. On November 15, 1902 a farewell dinner for the French ambassador to the United States was hosted by Senator Chauncey M. Depew and James Hazen Hyde, majority stockholder in the Equitable Life Assurance Society. As ambassador, Jules Cambon had played a significant role in negotiating the peace treaty which had signalled an end to the Spanish-American War. The dinner celebrating him was one of the year's major society events, attracting the attendance of Mark Twain, Woodrow Wilson, J. P. Morgan, and other major figures, as well as a letter of regret from President Theodore Roosevelt. Offered here is Hyde's personal scrapbook containing articles about the event from newspapers throughout the United States. The articles are glued down on heavy scrapbook leaves--a total of 42 scrapbook pages of clippings, Hyde's personal bookplate is attached to the verso of the front cover.
