Antwerp (?): Unknown Publisher, 1835. Hand-colored illuminated vue d'optique. 6 3/4 inches by 8 3/4 inches. Prior to the invention of photography perspective views, called "vues d'optiques" by the French, were a specialized approach to engraving that exhibited a heightened perspective to approximate a 3-dimensional effect. Those precursors to photographic stereoviews frequently were hand-colored. Most of them were designed to be viewed via mirrors in a device like a zograscope. Less common were translucent prints that had to be backlit (for example in a "peep-show" box) to be seen as perspective views. Such "illuminated vues d'optiques" are now much more scarce. The vue d'optique offered here is a circa 1831-1835 view of a section of railroad track (with a steam engine) that is almost certainly an artist's conception of a proposed rail line between Liege, Belgium and Aix-la Chapelle (Aachen), Germany. It is a very attractive view that is in…

Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1936. 171 pages. SIGNED by the author and inscribed by him to Mississippi historian Percy Lee Rainwater. First printing of this history of the development of the Illinois Central Raiload from New Orleans to Cairo. The author's thesis is that the railroad was intended to open markets for cotton in the American northwest, thereby assuring the dominance of "King Cotton" and the endurance of slavery. He concludes that the ultimate completion of the route came 30 years too late for the accomplishment of those objectives. The book is clean and tight, with one bumped corner of the front cover; lightly worn at corners and head and foot of spine.. SIGNED. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Description:
Staunton, Virginia: Jed. Hotchkiss, 1896. Printed by The Norris Peters Co. in Washington, D.C. Designed and published by Jedediah Hotchkiss (1824-1898), the Confederate cartographer who spent the post-civil war years promoting the industrialization of the state of Virginia. This 1896 map represents one of his failed projects: the Virginians Railway, a railroad which he promoted to tie together ports, iron ore mines, smelters, and manufacturing centers in Virginia and to ship iron to the rest of the country. Investors were not interested in the low-quality iron ore in Virginia; so, the railroad was not built. The map appears to be rare--WorldCat locates only one copy (that one at the University of Virginia). The folded map is in near-fine condition: clean and bright, with barely a hint of edgewear. There is one barely discernible pinhole sized tear at the intersection of 2 fold lines.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good. Illus. by Jedediah Hotchkiss. 21 inches by 40 Inches. Map.
