Description:
v+448 pages with maps, photographs and appendices. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's beige clot with gilt lettering to spine in original publisher's pictorial jacket. First edition. Between 1892 and 1894, 258 monuments were erected and photographed along the Mexican border between El Paso and the Pacific Ocean. Their original purpose was to serve as unalterable evidence in the boundary and rights-of-acess disputes that periodically arose between the United States and Mexico, but Professor Humphrey has found a contemporary application for this border survey project. By comparing the original photographs with his own repeat photographs of the monuments made approximately ninety years later, he has been able to determine the kinds of and amount of vegetation changes that have occurred over this relatively long period. v+199 pages with bibliography and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine and cover. First edition. This work examines both predominately black newspapers in general and four in particular--the Chicago Defender, the Pittsburgh Courier, the Black Dispatch (Oklahoma City), and the Jackson (Mississippi) Advocate--and their coverage of national events. The beginnings of the black press are detailed, focusing on how they reported the anti-slavery movement, the Civil War and the Reconstruction era. Their coverage of the migration of blacks to the industrial north in the early twentieth century and World War I are next examined, followed by the black press response to World War II and the civil rights movement. The survival techniques used by the editors, how some editors reacted when faced with threats of physical harm, and how the individual editorial policies affected the different newspapers are fully explored. ix+207 pages with frontispiece map, illustrations and index. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to sine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Few characters in American past furnish the biographical material offered by John Smith. He was an Elizabethan adventurer whose career spanned tow hemispheres and whose role in the creation of the English colonies in New World can justly be called central. One cannot treat the early history of Virginia or New England without attention to Smith's activities. But Smith was more than a maker of history. He was also a maker of historical sources, and historians have been his captives ever since. Surely his reputation must test on his extraordinary talent as a formulator of the historical past. Some had doubted the Smith version of early colonial history, just as some contemporaries opposed his policies in Virginia. But since the formidable defense of Smith's truthfulness presented by Philip Barbour the issue has… Read More
