American Book Company, New York, 1936. This is probably the definative work on the McGuffey Readers - a 2 volume set with decorated tan boards and red leather spines in a slipcase covered with marbled paper. The books are EX-LIBRARY, although you would scarcely guess it from the condition. There is a large chip out of the top of the spine of each; otherwise, they hardly appear to have been opened. Slipcase just starting to split along upper joints, one abrasion where sticker was removed(?) Otherwise NICE. 203pp/482pp.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

All edges and endpapers marbled. Top edges tend to be darkened; There is the occasional scuff, a little wear at spine ends and corners, but overall, these volumes are solid, unmarked, square, and clean: NEAR FINE condition. Contents nice and fresh-looking. Bear in mind that this set is 150 years old. I can't imagine there is a nicer set anywhere. These are 16 massive and very heavy volumes. JB. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia, 1876. This is a 10 volume set of 1876 encyclopedias bound in leather. 10.25 X 7.25". Marbled edges and endpapers. The leather bindings are scuffed and most volumes are starting to crack along the exterior hinges where the leather is drying out. Volume 6 is the worst, just hanging on to its front cover. All are still intact, however. These volumes have very nice engraved plates as well as in-text illustrations. There are also some splendid 2 page colored maps mounted on binder's hinges so they can easily be removed, if desired. GOOD MINUS. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.

It was compiled by the editors of THE CONOISSEUR Magazine, so it was done well. Most major areas of collecting are covered. Numerous illustrations. Still a worthwhile reference even after 45 years.. Soiled, backstrip puckered, spine lettering completely faded, flyleaf torn out, front hinge cracking: about FAIR PLUS to GOOD MINUS. This is one of those wonderful source documents that tell us so much about life 100+ years ago. This book lists occupations as well as addresses for everyone in Chenango county. In some cases we are told that a person BOARDS at a certain address. Also - there are very cute illustrated ads throughout including one for a gasoline engine manufactured in Binghamton, NY, another for a cancer doctor, hotels, the Oxford Academy school, etc., etc. This book is a goldmine of information. 690pp + a color fold-out map attached inside the back cover..
