Description:
Tokyo: Yugensha. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. LIMITED FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES. A FINE COPY IN THE ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. Created "primarily as a memorial album to his daughter, Andrea, who was killed in an aeroplane crash ... the whole tenor of the book is forlorn... Never have flowers-that most uplifting of subjects-appeared so woebegone. Seldom has the manic activity of industrial manufacture seemed so pointless. And the Nova Scotia landscapes and still lifes-beautiful, bleak, elegiac-reveal an artist at the height of his powers but hardly at peace with the world or himself." Flower Is... constitutes "a major new statement in still photography... [and] can serve as an eminently fitting apotheosis for stream-of-consciousness photography" (The Photobook, I.264). Designed by Kohei Sugiura with Atsushi Sato. With introduction by Frank. Illustrated with 81 full-page photographs. (Tokyo): (Yugensha), (1987). Folio (343x250mm), original pictorial gray silk,… Read More

Description:
Atlanta: Nexus Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of one of the seminal photobooks of the 1980's. SIGNED BY BURKE INSIDE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF HIS HAND. One of only 1000 copies printed of the first edition. "Bill Burke has become known for his large-format portraits shot on Polaroid Land film, which have the formality and feel of nineteenth-century photographs whilst remaining acutely modern in their sensibilities. In his best book, I Want to Take Picture, this technique is entirely appropriate, since it records his personal pilgrimage to southeast Asia, duplicating the enterprise of the old colonialist photographers but adding a contemporary twist... "Although the pictures have a nineteenth-century feel, the book is also a diary that records a twentieth-century experience. Burke not only uses his photographs, but also employs documents- reproductions of ephemera like money and bus tickets- and collages them with handwritten captions. The result is a kaleidoscopic… Read More

Description:
Paris: Chaix. Very Good. ONE OF TOULOUSE-LAUTREC'S MOST FAMOUS LITHOGRAPHS. "This famous poster advertising Le Jardin de Paris shows the high-kicking performance of the dynamic Jane Avril in the quadrille naturaliste, framed by the staff of the orchestra's bass fiddle. Vaucaire described the dance in the August 1, 1886, Paris Illustré as 'that wonderful, insolent joke in which two women advanced side by side, each balancing on one foot while keeping the other at the level of the spectators' eyes. They wore silk stockings and cambric and lace drawers, with much swishing of pretty petticoats'" (Donson and Griepp, Great Lithographs by Toulouse-Lautrec). From the Les Maitres de L'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) series, plate 110. "The Masters of the Poster, first published in Paris from 1895 to 1900, is the most famous compilation ever made of the art of the great age of the poster-an art whose new graphic sophistication captured the ebullience of Paris… Read More

New York: Hollander Workshop. 1st Edition. No Binding. Fine. ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH BY ROBERT MOTHERWELL, one of only 100 signed and numbered by Motherwell. "For this series, one of many works with a Spanish theme, Motherwell recalled an experience he had while honeymooning in Madrid with Helen Frankenthaler in 1958. He had pinned drawing paper on the hotel walls and like the way the texture of the wall transferred itself to the sheets as he drew. To re-create this experience, Motherwell taped transfer paper to the spackled walls of [printer Irwin] Hollander's studio and rubbed the sheets with lithographic crayons to achieve the desired transfer of texture" (Wye and Figura, Artists & Prints: Masterworks from the Museum of Modern Art). As Motherwell's printer and collaborator Hollander later explained: "These are rubbings!... [A] transfer of feeling from Madrid to Tenth Street. So by putting a French transfer paper on the wall and taping it, he could take litho crayons and… Read More

Description:
Millertown, NY: Aperture. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. FIRST TRADE EDITION, DANNY LYON'S OWN ANNOTATED COPY.
This copy, Lyon's own, was sent to the former executive editor of Camera Arts, Fred Ritchen. Lyon's enclosed letter states, "I've marked some pages which I think makes a good progression over the years, showing a change in subject and style… For the most part I have also marked pictures that are less well known, and often have only appeared in print in this book. Nothing was run by any magazines when the hard back was printed… P.S. I'll need this particular copy back when you're done, as it is my own; though I'm sure I can get you another from Aperture" (December 17, 1982). The resultant May 1983 issue of Camera Arts is included, as is a provenance letter by Tom Ridinger, co-founder of Camera Arts, stating this "must be the rarest copy of Danny Lyon's Pictures from the New World." Description:
Paris: Marcel Picard. No Binding. Very Good. 1928 COLOR LITHOGRAPH, one of Carlu's most celebrated posters. A classic Art Deco poster, showing cubist influences, by Jean Carlu, one of the early twentieth-century's preeminent poster designers. On his famous image of the comedienne Pépa Bonafé, Carlu explained: "The Pépa Bonafé agent asked me to create a poster but I was not, like Loupot, a posterist of women. I did not feel comfortable. However, by stylizing her profile, I immediately caught the resemblance. Pépa Bonafé did not look her best, but she understood that this poster on walls would be excellent publicity... I combined curves and straight lines so that I could associate the mask of joy with the mask of sadness." Paris: Marcel Picard, 1928. 22 ½ x14 ¾ in, 570x370mm. Linen backed. Clean folds, otherwise fine.
