[At time of listing, there are no other copies for sale online and the book is held at only 11 libraries worldwide.] Language: Icelandic 482 p. ; ill. (portraits, maps); includes bibliography and index. Presumably first edition, this blue cloth hardcover with pictorial dust jacket is still in commercial plastic wrap/unopened. As such, some details listed here have been based upon library cataloguing information. The book and dust jacket appear to be in Near Fine to Fine condition, with the exception of a minor bump to top edge of rear cover and a small amount of shelfwear in places where shrinkwrap has been torn. Please see listing images. Stephan G. Stephansson (1853-1927) was a celebrated Icelandic-Canadian poet. The title of this volume of his biography relates to the title of his 6-volume collection of poetry Andvökur, so-titled for the fact that much of his poetry was written during bouts of insomnia. Description:
First edition, first printing.
216 p.; ill. Very minor shelf wear, and a small initial in pen to upper corner of half-title, otherwise Fine.
From the back:
Norman "Red" Ryan was a notorious bank robber, safecracker, and killer. He escaped from Kingston Penitentiary twice—first by force, and then years later by gulling the credulous into believing that he was "reformed." Ryan's second emancipation included the prison's Roman Catholic chaplain, several nationally prominent citizens, the country's largest newspaper, and, ultimately, R. B. Bennett, the prime minister of Canada, who made the mistake of arranging a "political parole" for Ryan.
Six people—three of them innocent victims—died as a result of Red Ryan's freedom. Dubbed "the Jesse James of Canada" and "Canada's most notorious criminal," Ryan had compiled a record of nineteen convictions for crimes of theft and violence, and had been in nine shooting affrays with police and citizens. He was a "lifer" in an arrow when "life" meant just… Read More

Description:
First thus, first printing (Greywood edition). [Originally published by Harlequin Books, Winnipeg, 1954.]158 p. ; 18 cm. An handsome, edge-painted (red), vintage paperback with pictorial cover depicting the Donnellys' grave, shows negligible shelfwear and light markings to covers, with the top red edge being very very slightly sunned, but is otherwise in Fine condition, appearing to have been unread. Did not scan inside book in order to preserve crispness. Photographs can be taken upon request. From the rear: Fear reigned throughout Lucan district for twenty-three long years. Fear of ruination and destruction, of vicious beatings that maimed or killed, and the fear of violent death at the hands of THE BLACK DONNELLYS. The name DONNELLY was synonymous with fear, and brave men and women were as children before their terrible vindictiveness. None dared to stand against them, until one man formed a plan to destroy The Donnellys . . . a plan that was to go down as one of the bloodiest massacres in history.

Description:
First edition, first printing. 96 p. ; ill. ; 24 cm. Includes Index (pp. 94-96), chronology, and suggested further reading. This is a book in sort of large print, presumably intended for mature younger students.Black hardcover and dust jacket are in Near Fine to Fine condition with the exception of very minimal shelfwear, a few lightly dogeared pages, and a few very small and faint stains. Discard from the Wanipigow School Library, in protective plastic sleeve, with associated stickers, stamps, and card pocket (checked out only once, 30 years ago). From the dust jacket: "You are destined to be the leaders of a glorious new order," Adolf Hitler told the young people of Germany in 1938. This was the calculated appeal that masked the Nazi leader's plan to mold the youth of a nation to his will. His main tool would be the Hitler Youth, an organization that drew in Germany's young people with promises of a bright future and then sought to turn them into obedient servants of the Nazi regime. The Hitler Youth… Read More

Includes Index (pp. 157-159).Softcover book shows minor shelfwear to covers, mainly edges, and cover curl, as well as expected aging (yellowing) of both covers and pages. The book has the occasional unobtrusive checkmark or underline in pen, but is otherwise internally in Near Fine condition. Profusely illustrated with both artwork and photography. From the rear: Seven distinguished crime writers look at the past, present and future of crime writing in this book, which springs from a BBC Television series. They examine the great landmarks of crime fiction, and a richly illustrated linking commentary reflects on the origins and developmentof the most popular of all fiction genres. But the point of view is not just historical; the essayists show how detective stories reveal a great many of the prevalent social attitudes of the last hundred years. And the essays deal not only with crime fiction in printed form but also on television and film.

First Edition.
120 p.; ill. Scarce book with minor scrapes/shelfwear to dust jacket. Heel and tip of spine slightly bumped, otherwise Fine. From dust jacket:
In Dangerous Luck, David Makow brings into focus the profound questions as to whether a person's life unfolds by his own volition, circumstances, fate, or luck.
A teenager when the Nazi war machine rolled into his native Poland, he survived on his wits and his ability to make quick decisions that turned out to be the correct ones.
His first fortunate decision was made as the German army approached the city of Lodz, where he lived. While many were leaving by foot or horse cart, he decided to remain with his parents and wait for the Germans to arrive. Those who left were strafed mercilessly by German aircraft on the road to Warsaw. Another lucky decision was to move to the interior of Poland just before the Lodz ghetto was established.
In 1942, when the Holocaust began, he made his most amazing choice. Instead of trying to get as far as he… Read More

139 p.; ill.; 20 cm. 1979 translation.
Well-bound softcover with illustrations throughout, once owned by the Manitoba Genealogical Society. There are the expected library markings and shelfwear, including a small tear to bottom of cover, and a few dogears throughout, but otherwise quite Fine internally.
From the rear:
This diary is, at one and the same time, both a fascinating social history and the self-portrait of a most sensitive man. It was written in Irish between 1827 and 1835 by Humphrey O'Sullivan, while living in Callan, Co. Kilkenny. He followed his father's calling when he became a hedgeschool master but later went on to be-come a prosperous businessman and philanthropist. No aspect of life escaped his attention, from the dire poverty and degradation of the peasantry to the flora and fauna of the region. O'Sullivan's notation of life in Ireland is to be found in manuscripts now in the Royal Irish Academy.
