From the rear cover:

The mysteries of the ancients—the builders of such remarkable monuments as Stonehenge, The Great Pyramid of Giza, Machu Picchu and the awesome monoliths of Easter Island—have long been the subject of great fascination to scholars and laymen. Just who were these peoples, the possessors of vast knowledge and impressive technology that rival our own? Why and how did they build these stone monoliths in diverse places all over the globe? And what wisdom do these ancient stones hold for us today?
Dr. David Zink, named Explorer of the Year in 1976 by the International Explorers Society and the author of THE STONES OF ATLANTIS, has traveled all over the world to gather… Read More

A thousand years of Scotland's history .. . the growth of a nation . . . its struggle for independence and its surrender of that independence. . . . From the jacket flap: 'Rest and be Thankful', reads the legend on a white stone that stands at the summit of the pass leading over Glen Croe from Loch Long to Loch Fyne in the County of Argyll. Set there by the regiment that repaired the road more than a hundred years ago, the stone marks the frontier between the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland; and the legend on it testifies at once to the ardour of the ascent and the satisfaction of journey's end achieved. Pictorial hardcover with no obvious defects, pictorial endpapers, and profusely illustrated throughout in full colour, on crisp, clean and clear paper. Dust jacket shows minor wear, including scuffs and edgewear.

From the DJ flaps:

The history of Scotland is like its landscape—full of peaks and valleys, of ruggedness and grandeur, of gentleness and calm splendor. Its story is inextricably linked with its larger neighbor England, but is completely individual. Although joined by the union of the crowns in the form of James VI of Scotland who became James I of England, there is no doubting Scotland's unique and special place in history. From Bannockburn to Braveheart, Bonnie Prince Charlie to Rabbie Burns, the Scots have proved to be a people whose character and ability have made their world influence disproportionate to the size of their country. This book looks at the many facets of Scotland from its Crown Jewels to its stunning geography… Read More

From the dust jacket:

The Centennial Travel Series

The bracing climate, the heather, glens, moors, lochs and spectacular scenery attracted visitors to Scotland in the late nineteenth century just as today. In the pages of this lavishly illustrated travelogue, the reader will discover for him-self the pleasures of journeys made in the 1880s 'north of the Border'. The author, the Rev. Samuel Green, made many visits to Scotland, and in this volume set down descriptions and opinions of what he saw and enjoyed, providing the Victorian tourist with a perceptive guide to the country — and not neglecting to offer sound advice to the intending sightseer. Handsome brown sort of burlap cloth hardcover with faux-leather spine and debossed title, shows minor shelfwear for its age. From the introduction:

History moves a long way in four hundred years, but just as Cartier, Champlain, and other sturdy explorers of those earlier days found in Tadoussac a happy refuge for their storm-tossed ships, so the modern seeker of peace and tranquillity turns to Tadoussac for the summer attractions and recreations which have made this historic Canadian settlement a kingdom of delight.
