Doctor Sir William Grenfell was first sent to Newfoundland in 1892 by the Royal National Deep Sea Mission to Fishermen to institute medical facilities for the coastal inhabitants and fisherman, incuding the aborignal peoples, of that region. He set up a series of coastal cottage hospitals in Labrador. The amusing anecdotal adventures of an "advance man" for "Mumkin's Magnificent Marvels and Munificent Model Monuments to Mankind", a traveling carnival and sideshow. A fine, fresh copy, all white stamping still clean and bright. Quite the knee-slapper back in '08.

Three quarter dark brwon leather over marbled paper-covered boards, raised spine hubs with compartments lined in gilt, green leather title labels lettered in gilt in one compartment. 302 pps. and 314 pps. Both volumes are tight, occasional light foxing, some soiling to the title page of Vol. II. Each volumes has ink notation on the front pastedown "Neath Library--10 July 1854--7 days". "Neath Library" is also stamped in gilt in the lower spine compartment. Genearlly rubbed about the edges and with some scuffing to the spines and covers.

A tight, near fine copy, wear to one tip andspine lettering very slightly duller. No jacket. Linton Wells (1893-1973) was an American journalist and author. He gained fame as a foreign correspondent covering the Russian Revolution. In the mid-1920s, working for the Associated Press, he became known for his particpation in long-distance excursions in inlcluding one as a stowaway on a leg of a round-the would flight by the U.,S. Army, the first non-stop automobile trip betwenn Los Angeles and New York, and the then-fastest circumnavigation of the earth , the subject of this memoir.

Autobiographical account of Englishman George Ballantine, who came to the United States in 1845. Upon arrival, he nearly signed on as a hand on a whaler but rather responded to the inducements of recruiting poster and joined the Army. What follows is an intelligent, fascinating account of Army travel and life as well as of the author's service in the Mexican War. A solidly very good copy, hinges firm, spine gilt clear; moderate wear at the very ends of the spine, some bumping at the tips. Scattered foxing throughout.

Illustrated with nearly three hundred full page engravings of ancient, modern, and biblical syies, and with folding maps. Firm in its binding though the hinges are split, some wear and creasing to the spine lable from opening this thick volume. Small ownership stamp on half-title. Interior clean and complete. Affixed to the front pastedown there is a May,1881 dated Queen's Prize presentation bookplate from the Science And Art Department of the Committee Of Council on Education.

A notable addition to the collection of diaries of China travel, the diary of Chester Fritz's journey through southwestern China in 1917. The youthful Fritz was employed as the Asain representative of the Fisher Flouring Mills company and took advantage of his work inthe ports to extend his travels to the interior through Yunnan Province, Szechwan to the border of Tibet and finally along the Yangtze River to Shanghai.

Covers, text block edges and spine are soiled but the interior is generally clean with an occasional foxed spot. Any edition of this guide to Richmond is uncommon but the first is quite rare.

Tight, internally clean and fresh; offsetting to the endpapers and wear at the outer hinges and tips, spine lightly cracked. Previous ownership of Thomas J. Carpenter, a mid-19th century New Jersey judge and bound personally for him with his name stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine. A very acceptable example.
