The set The Pascagoula River Valley includes Jackson County, Mississippi, and George County, which was part of Jackson County for a century. The existing written and legendary material on this region has been brought together in the first volume of this set, entitled History, Story, and Legend of the Pascagoula Country, which covers the history of the territory up to 1817. Part I of Volume II (History and Genealogy of the Pascagoula River Country) covers additional history of the region, from 1812 to 1960. Part II of Volume II, over half the book, is devoted to genealogy: names of immigrants coming into the region, the census of 1850, families of 1860, cemetery records, and Bible records. Three courthouse fires in Jackson County make this volume particularly valuable as a source of genealogical records.

Print on Demand Edition 2013. 257 pp., new index This history of Fairfield County, by native Fitz Hugh McMaster, is an informative and entertaining account which combines narrative by the author, sketches by other citizens of the county, and pages of valuable statistics about the county and its citizens. Genealogical material is readily available in this volume: in chapters on early settlers, land grant owners and locations, a census of farms with names of owners, teachers at the Mount Zion Institute, and lists of county officers including senators and representatives from 1776 to 1941. Other genealogical records are found in rosters of soldiers in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Seminole War, Mexican War, Civil War, and World War I; Heads of Families in the U.S. Census of 1790; and twenty pages of local census taken in 1829. An every-name index was prepared for this reprint edition.

Print on Demand Edition 2016. xviii, 204 pp., illus., new index Telfair County was created in 1807; later, portions of the county were used in the creation of Dodge, Coffee, and Montgomery counties. Written as a series of historical vignettes, the book contains sketches of the pioneer settlers and information on the dangers they faced and the way they lived. The political, legal, religious, and educational aspects of the county are covered. Civil War rosters are included along with letters from the troops. There is a section on World War I including letters home from soldiers and nurses who were "over there." A complete name index was prepared for this edition.

Griffin contains a wealth of information not available elsewhere. Tryon County was formed in 1768 from the part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River. Due to inaccurate and delayed surveying, Tryon County encompassed a large area of northwestern South Carolina. The original area of the county encompassed the following modern day areas: all of Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, and Rutherford counties in North Carolina and Cherokee, Chester, Laurens, Spartanburg, Union, and York counties in South Carolina; and parts of Buke and McDowell counties in North Carolina and Greenville and Newberry counties in South Carolina. In 1779 Tryon County was divided into Lincoln and Rutherford counties in North Carolina and ceased to exist. The early settlers of the county, most of whom were from the upper districts of South Carolina, are named and discussed under the topics of living conditions, crops, mills, election precincts, and the villages of the county. Of particular interest are biographical sketches of judges, County Court clerks, sheriffs, commissioners, Circuit Court clerks, and representatives to the Legislature. One chapter gives a "General View of Pickens County," under the headings of rivers and water courses, towns (Carrollton, Bridgeville, Yorkville, and Franconia), geography and land, agriculture, roads, religion, manufactures, character of the inhabitants, minerals, newspapers, and educational facilities. This volume has extensive treatment of the problems of the early settlers as they were caught under the pressure of the struggles among the British, Spanish, and the Indians over the territory. It is one of the rare books with some attention paid to the Spanish missions along the Georgia coast. The author's lurid narrative style makes this history one of the more engaging of its kind. His knowledge of the Okefenokee area and its people was extensive. A chapter is devoted to towns which have disappeared including Trader's Hill, the first seat of government in Charlton County. This book traces the early history of the area, covers the economic and social impact of the gold discovery, and then details the general history of the county up to 1932. A general account of the original inhabitants, the Cherokee Indians, is followed by a description of the "period of Intrusion," when Indians, the Federal Government, Georgia, and individual settlers competed with each other for land in the area. A pine tree on the north bank of the Black River, called the King's Tree by an early explorer, became the focal point of settlement in what is now Williamsburg County, and gave the name to the county seat.
