Octavo; xx, 204 pages, contemporary embossed brown cloth, lacks top inch of spine; x-library with emboss on Contents leaf, pocket carefully removed from rear endpaper, bookplate at front Martineau was a remarkable women, and a remarkable woman in the 19th century. She was involved in travel, economics, philosophy, literature, and is considered by some "the first woman sociologist". Martineau wroter her equally remarkable autobiography. This anonymously published work focusses on the five years she lived the life of an invalid. Two of the chapters are, "Some Perils and Pains of Invalidism," and "Some Gains and Sweets of Invalidism,". Here, too, is perhaps the first book appearance of Richard Monckton Milnes' poem, "To Harriet Martineau. Christian Endurance." which appeared in 1843.

Philadelphia: Privately Printed by C. Sherman, 1853. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo, 336 pages, original cloth, spine lightly sunned. Scarce. Londoner Esther De Berdt married an American lawyer and re-located to Philadelphia in 1770. As part of the Philadelphia gentry, she met many of the important Colonists, including Gen. George Washington. Initially opposed, she warmed to the cause of independence. Her husband, Joseph, became Washington's aide and secretary and eventually a general ( and still later, Governor of Pennsylvania). Esther, meanwhile, headed the Ladies of Philadelphia and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Continental Army. She dies at age 34 in 1780, failing to see the success that crowned her efforts. Much of this text is in the form of letters. She was one of the outstanding women of the American Revolution.

"Founded in 1827 by George Champlin Sibley and Mary Easton Sibley as The Lindenwood School for Girls, it is the second oldest higher-education institution west of the Mississippi River and since 1990 the fastest growing university in the Midwest - Wikipedia." Nearly bankrupt in 1989, it began accepting farm animals toward tuition credits ! The founding Sibleys "Lindenwood University traces its roots back to George Champlin Sibley, an early 19th-century American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and politician, and his wife Mary Easton Sibley, an educator. " They worked at Fort Osage and Fort Sibley. This is the oldest woman's school west of the Mississippi.
