Description:
Euroa, Victoria, Australia: Shire of Euroa, 1980. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good/No Jacket. 328 pages b/w photos - The Shire of Euroa was a local government area about 145 kilometres (90 mi) northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of 1,412 square kilometres (545.2 sq mi), and existed from 1879 until 1994. Euroa was originally within the Shire of Benalla (1868) and was severed and incorporated on 3 November 1879 as the Shire of Euroa. It lost part of several ridings when the Shire of Violet Town was created on 11 April 1895, and part of its north riding was annexed to the Shire of Shepparton on 24 May 1911. On 18 November 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with the Shires of Goulburn and Violet Town and some neighbouring districts into the Shire of Strathbogie. The Arcadia and Karramomus districts transferred to City of Greater Shepparton, whilst the Terip Terip district transferred to the Shire of Murrindindi.

Description:
Adelaide, South Australia, Australia: Australian Railway Historical Society (SA), 1979. 2nd Edition . Soft cover. Good/No Jacket. 48 pages b/w photos - The beginnings of the railway were in the Port Adelaide railway line. This suburban main line linked the harbour area of Port Adelaide to the colony, and was laid with Irish gauge 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) track. This line was opened in 1856. Later on, branch lines in the state's north in the mining towns of Kapunda and Burra were linked through to the Adelaide metropolitan system. From here, a south main line extended to meet the horse tramway from Victor Harbor to Strathalbyn, and towards to SA/Victorian Border. With the metropolitan systems being broad gauge, the mid north and south east of the state were originally laid with 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow gauge track. These systems were closely based on British practice, as was the broad gauge system prior to 1926. Locomotives and rolling stock were bought from Britain and the USA, from builders such… Read More

Description:
Thirlmere, New South Wales, Australia: New South Wales Rail Transport Museum, 1996. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. owners stamp on endpapers - 224 pages colour and b/w photos - The 59 Class are a steam locomotive ordered by the New South Wales Government Railways of Australia. The class were ordered after the Second World War from the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation to relieve motive power shortages. The design is a variation on the USRA Light Mikado, a design which first appeared in 1918.Twenty locomotives were delivered during 1952 - 1953. The main visible differences are the locations of the steam and sand domes on the boiler and the location of the headlight. The most immediately apparent difference is the rather stubby short tender that was specially built to allow the 59-class to be turned on standard 60-foot turntables. It was the specification of these tenders which considerably delayed the delivery from initial order. Unfortunately due to the weight of the locomotive it was… Read More

Description:
Burwood, NSW, Australia: New South Wales Rail Transport Museum, 1994. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 226 Pages with Colour and Black/White Photos - The AD60 class was a class of steam locomotives operated by the New South Wales Government Railways in Australia. They were built with the 4-8-4+4-8-4 wheel arrangement. This was the first appearance of the Beyer-Garratt type locomotive on the New South Wales Government Railways, although this type of articulated unit had seen considerable use on the narrow gauge lines of other Australian systems for many years. Designed to a light axleload of only 16 tons (16.3 t), they were apparently intended for hauling feeder branch-line services to the main lines where heavier main-line locomotives could continue with the load. Twenty five locomotives, and subsequently a further twenty five, were ordered from Beyer, Peacock and Company, but following the change of policy in favour of diesel traction, attempts were made to cancel part of the order.… Read More

Description:
Adelaide, South Australia, Australia: Australian Railway Historical Society (SA), 1979. 2nd Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 52 Pages with Black/White Photos. The first South Australian Railways 700 Class locomotives were built during the mid 1920s in Great Britain by the Armstrong Whitworth Company and were used as main line freight locomotives, releasing the aged small power Rx-class fleet for shunting and branch line services. The difference in power between these two classes can be gauged by the fact that a 700 could lift 390 tons over Mt Lofty while an Rx could manage only 190 tons. The 700-class Mikado type locomotive proved so successful that another ten were ordered, this time from the SAR's own Islington Workshops. Though dimensionally similar to the original engines they differed in some minor details and as a result were classified 710. Unfortunately the Mikado fleet were all sent to the breakers yard for scrap metal during the 1960s. One example of the Class survives as a… Read More

Description:
Sandy Bay, Tasmania: Lou Rae, 2008. Reprint . Laminated Pictorial Boards. Very Good/No Jacket. 110 Pages with Colour and Black/White Photos. When the ABT Railway was built in Tasmania, it was considered one of the engineering marvels of Australia. The West Coast pioneers who built the original railway in 1896 accomplished a great feat of labour. For many miles along the King River the railway line was hewn with pick and shovel out of the steep side of the gorge. Forty two bridges were built over the 22-mile long stretch of wilderness; for the 'quarter mile' bridge below the gorge, pylons had to be driven 60 feet into the silt with men constantly up to their waists in the cold water.
