Translated from the original Russian by Nicholas Bethell and David Burg. A novel about patients in a cancer ward as an allegory for the Soviet system of government. 367 pages. A collection of 64 interviews conducted with people in various parts of China, in various walks of life. Interviews took place in the early 1980s, so are reflecting of a China as it was almost 40 years ago. Today's China is much more capitalistic, while still under a firm totalitarian grip.

Possibly a first edition, it really doesn't say. Shows a bit of wear along the upper and lower edges of the book and the dust jacket, but nothing unexpected for a 35+ year old book. Most of the pages are lightly tanned, but not all (two different kinds of paper, obviously). The life story of a man who advised both Joe McCarthy and Donald Trump, along with many others of equal or lesser notoriety.

Very little wear to the book, just a slight bit of fading to the fabric on the top edge. The dust jacket has small patches of wear at the corners, most noticeable at the extremities of the spine. The deckle-edged pages are clean, tight and bright. A story set in 1960s Haiti under the regime of a brutal dictator.

There is a tiny stain at the lower corner page ends, impacting about 40 pages, but coming nowhere near the text. Outside of that, the pages are clean, tight and intact. A Dean at the University of Chicago travels with his wife behind the Iron Curtain where is mother-in-law is dying. While tolerating the Romanian winter, the Dean considers the political realities of both east and west.

Five hundred pages of the best of Art Buchwald from 1956 to 1977. Humorist, satirist, political commentator, thrice a week columnist, but he never made it onto Nixon's Enemies List. When I was a teen, on the days Buchwald's columns came out, the sports page took second place. This copy has been well preserved. The book shows very little wear, and the pages are clean, tight and intact. The dust jacket has a moderate number of small tears around the edges, none exceeding a centimeter.
