First edition. Hal Ambler is confined to a secret installation that houses insane former spies. But Hal isn't insane. He manages to escape and then goes in search of who and what has kept him locked up. Published posthumously. Book and dust jacket are in very nice condition. A spot of price tag residue remains on the upper right corner of the front of the dust jacket.

A man finds that with the use of certain hallucinogenic drugs, he is able to travel between his time and the 14th century. Described on the flyleaf as an ancient/modern Gothic tale. Some aspects of the story make me wonder if it wasn't a bit influential in the composition of Stephen King's and Peter Straub's The Talisman. (I'm just speculating, you'll have to ask them.)

From there he descends into debauchery and madness.
