Trade paperback, this is a scholarly work offering background and criticism. The text of the satire Candide runs the first 80 pages of this 194-page text. Voltaire's satire skewers religion, theologians, governments, armies, philosophies, and philosophers. Edited by Robert M. Adams, this is a stated first edition. The original story was first published in 1759.There are chips and rubs on the cover, creases and fading on the spine and scattered underlining and margin notes on the pages. None of the wear is significant, and the pages remain tight and readable.

No dust jacket. I would say the book looks like it has hardly been read, but there are some areas of highlighting (by someone without a proper highlighter) early on in the book. These quit by page 73 out of 464, and then there are two more places, noted on the last page, following acknowledgements, where someone else underlined with ball point, forgoing even the pretense of highlighting. These marks are on pages 120 (small) and 175 (much more substantial). None of these scholarly(?) notations detract much from the reading itself. Pages are deckle-edged and tightly bound, and clean with the excepting of the above-mentioned markings of mysterious origin. I haven't read this one (yet) and it has been a long time since I read Catch-22, but I think there are some of the same characters within. I do know it is the same Heller satire that I have enjoyed before.

Five hundred pages of the best of Art Buchwald from 1956 to 1977. Humorist, satirist, political commentator, thrice a week columnist, but he never made it onto Nixon's Enemies List. When I was a teen, on the days Buchwald's columns came out, the sports page took second place. This copy has been well preserved. The book shows very little wear, and the pages are clean, tight and intact. The dust jacket has a moderate number of small tears around the edges, none exceeding a centimeter.

My first reaction (and my daughter's, almost simultaneously) was "so he DID write something other than Heart of Darkness. (Turns out, quite a few others.) This 269 page book begins with a 26 page introduction and an eight page author's note.
