Urbana, Illinois:: Inky Press Productions / Bea Nettles,, 2007.. Edition of 10. 5.5 x 7.5"; 57 pages. Codex grey-green cloth bound, grey end sheets. Signed inside front. Over 75 family photos, predominately black-and-white. Includes index of photos with dates and locations. Bea Nettles: "My Grandmother Noble gave me my first camera when I was ten years old. She didn't purchase it, but had received it as a bonus of some sort. It was red plastic and took wide roll film. This was in 1956, so 2006 marks the fiftieth year that I have been making portraits of my family in Florida. Photography today is so easy and cheap that it is ubiquitous. Huge quantities of pictures are created, looked at, then deleted. In the fifties, film was expensive and I can remember planning and taking almost every shot. I still have all the negatives.

"In Golden Gate Fog, the viewer listens to the rhythmic music of the ocean and fog horn recorded while the photos were taken, while viewing San Francisco as seen through a silken curtain of fog. New Paltz, New York:: Papyrus Productions ,, 2010.. Edition of 10. 10.75 x 8.125"; 38 pages. Japanese stab binding. Photography. Imagination the Spy compares through photographs historic and contemporary representations of Oceania. Papyrus Productions: "One hundred years ago, the anthropologist Arthur Maurice Hocart worked and photographed on Lakeba and Rotuma, two remote Fijian islands. My own travels in Fiji from 1995 - 2001 took me to the same two remote islands. This book contrasts two responses to these similar experiences. Hocart's photographs, always on the left page, are housed in the Alexander Turnbulll Library, National Library of New Zealand, Te Puna Mâtauranga o Aotearoa. My own imaginative response to these Fijian islands results from my photographs, watercolors made in 1995-2001, and from a personal idiosyncratic collection of nineteenth century travel books.

Mitchell: "The purse binding was created and made by Virginia Phelps, a book artist living in the San Francisco Bay Area. A chance meeting between Virginia and Margaretta Mitchell at the Antiquarian Book Festival was the beginning of a creative collaboration. When Virginia mentioned having made a book in the form of a loaf of bread, Margaretta immediately replied that she wanted to make a book of images in a purse-like form. Fast forward ... the results are 'On the Avenue'. "'On the Avenue' is a little book that lifts the spirits, bringing a smile to the lover of Manhattan's Fifth Avenue on a beautiful spring day, Easter Sunday 2006. Signed and numbered by both artists. Paper Boats is a collaborative book project by Italian artist Patricia Silva and American artist Lyall Harris. Originally it was produced in an edition of 2 as part of their book art project "Meeting Places." This is the digital version in an edition of 150. Artist statement: "A photo-documentary illustrates the distressing loss of identity taking place in contemporary mass immigration to Europe. The visual rhythm of the book works something like a meditation (vs. a political statement) - there are 100 images of hands with boats, interspersed with about 25 quotes (some in Italian) and 10 "portraits," total page count is 144 - and we think it brings this content home in a striking way." Claire Lambe, "Malian Portrait Photography" and "Photo-Rapide": Francois Deschamps at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art: "Deschamps riffs off the tradition of the photo studio in ways that are particularly interesting. While in Bamako, he created a studio complete with a hand-painted sign and rubber stamps, but he also went out into the community to find subjects for his project. Tucson, Arizona:: Spaceheater Editions,, 2009.. Edition 1000. 8.25 x 10.75 x 1.5"; 90 pages. Four-color offset lithography. Gilded edges. Self-covering. Philip Zimmermann: "Four-color offset lithography printed book was created as a series of two page board book spreads that minimize the visual distraction of a 'gutter' on the panoramic view of each skyscape. The edges of the book are rounded and gilded in the fashion of religious breviaries or missals. "This is a book of border beatitudes. This work comments on the complicated attitudes of Americans on illegal immigration from Mexico. The cover shows a photograph of the area of Southern Arizona which is the most active in terms of migration across the Sonoran desert, and where thousands have lost their lives in the deadly desert heat. The interior pages show the progression of a typical high desert day from dawn to sunset with a single line of text on each two page spread." Zimmerman (Blog), March 8, 2010:… Read More

Se Souvenir is about Normandy, France, and the memorials and beaches commemorating the D-Day invasion during the second World War. It’s also about Max, my ex-father-in-law, whom I never met. He was wounded in the second wave of the invasion and survived, and the old photographs are of him as a soldier. "The photographs of Max maintain the fiction that all is well, presenting a smiling uniformed soldier who looks healthy and whole. Like most family photographs, the agenda here is to show life as you want it to be, orderly, stable, rich with family and friends, and service to country, not necessarily as it is.
