Description:
Born in Buenos Aires, Jorge Borges (1899-1986) was educated in Europe and returned to Buenos Aires in 1921, where he co-founded several avant-garde literary periodicals. In 1955, after the fall of Juan Peron, whom he vigorously opposed, he was appointed director of the Argentine National Library. With Samuel Beckett he was awarded the 1961 $10,000 International Publishers Prize, which helped to establish him as one of the most prominent writers in the world. Borges regularly taught and lectured throughout the United States and Europe. His ideas have been a profound influence on writers throughout the Western world and on literary and critical theory. A prolific writer of essays, short stories, and plays, Borges regarded people's endeavors to understand an incomprehensible world as fiction; hence, his fiction is metaphysical and based on what he called 'an esthetics of the intellect'. Some critics have called him 'a mystic'. This collection was published before Borges died, so it contains what he… Read More

Description:
The Darien Disaster refers to a series of events which took place from 1698-1700, when the Scots defied the English and Spanish and tried to establish a settlement in Panama. What transpired cost 2,000 Scots their lives and firmly marked the end of Scotland's attempt at independence. It remains a scar on the Scottish psyche. The Darien Disaster, A Scots Colony in the New World 1698-1700 was written in 1968 by the preeminent authority on Scottish history, the Canadian-English journalist John Prebble (1915-2001). It was a best-seller and was re-issued by Edinburgh's Mainstream Publishing in 1978, as a trade paperback which, oddly, has a dust jacket. It is 366 pages, including lots of images. It has one dogear and a gift inscription in the front (father to daughter) but is in excellent condition.

Description:
The is a first edition from the classics series published by International Collectors Library in 1970. Green Mansions: A Romance of the Tropical Forest is a 1904 novel by the prolific Anglo-Argentinian writer William Henry Hudson (1841-1922). A failed revolutionary attempt drives the hero of Hudson's novel to seek refuge in the primeval forests of south-western Venezuela. There, in the 'green mansions' of the title, Abel encounters the wood-nymph Rima, the last survivor of a mysterious aboriginal race. The love that flowers between them is soon overshadowed by cruelty and sorrow. One of the acknowledged masters of natural history writing, W. H. Hudson forms an important link between nineteenth-century Romanticism and the twentieth-century ecological movement. First published in 1904 and a bestseller after its reissue a dozen years later, Green Mansions offers its readers a poignant meditation on the loss of wilderness, the dream of a return to nature, and the bitter reality of the encounter between… Read More

Description:
This is an original watercolor by, I assume, a Peruvian artist. It is signed 'Pacus 85', or 'Paous 85', but I can't find an artist with a similar name.
It's very well-done and of high quality. It is a richly-colored scene of five Peruvian women (identifiable by their headwear and braids) sitting among their wares--large pots and fabric, in front of the village church.
6 3/8" x 9 3/4"
It was originally professionally framed. The frame broke and is gone; the painting is still attached to the original matting.
The painting itself is in perfect condition.

Description:
This is a stated first edition of The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta, by the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa. It is a psychological portrait of a modern revolutionary and the account of an old friend's struggle to understand him. The novel probes the long and checkered history of radical politics in Latin America, by recounting the investigation into a failed rebellion led by Alejandro Mayta and a young military officer named Vallejos in Jauja, a town in the Peruvian highlands, in 1958. In each of the novel's first nine chapters, the narrator researches the uprising, interviewing participants in the rebellion and individuals connected to its organizers. This book was a gift; the jacket is price-clipped and the recipient wrote his name on the front endpaper--he later crossed it out, and it is small. There is no evidence that he read it though. There is the tiniest amount of shelfwear to the jacket; the rest of the book is pristine.
