Description:
This is a first edition (1994) of the Reader's Digest edition of Captains Courageous: A Story of the Grand Banks, by the English writer Rudyard Kipling. It is about a boy who is rescued from drowning off Newfoundland's Grand Banks, and how he survives trials and adventures.

It was originally published in installments in 1896-1897 and is the only Kipling novel set in North America. It was originally illustrated by the American daguerreotypist Isaiah West Taber, and all of his illustrations are in this book.

164 pages. It never had a dust jacket--it's pale green boards with gilt lettering and a gilt design on the cover.
The original owner read to page 25, dog-eared it, and didn't return to it. So near-mint condition. No shelfwear, no other marks in or on it. Lovely book.

Description:
Captain Frederick Marryat (1792 - 1848) was a Royal Navy officer and novelist--a pioneer of the sea story. He is best known for Mr. Midshipman Easy and The Children of the New Forest (and for creating the maritime signaling system, Marryat's Code). The Children of the New Forest is a children's novel, published in 1847 and set in the time of the English Civil War. It is about four orphaned children who must hide from the Roundheads; they live in the New Forest and learn to live off the land. This copy is undated. I'm going by someone else's estimate of 1962. It is part of the Children's Illustrated Classics series, which began in 1948. From the look of it though, 1962 seems correct. It is in mint condition; 325 clean, creamy white pages. The only marking on it is the original owner/child's name written on the front endpaper (very small). There are also 7 colour plates, and 16 black and white illustrations, by Lionel Edwards, the English artist so well-known for his paintings of horses and country life… Read More

Description:
Hans Brinker, or TheSilver Skates: A Story of Life in Hollandis a novel by American author Mary Mapes Dodge, first published in 1865. The story takes place in the Netherlands and is a colorful fictional portrait of early 19th-century Dutch life, as well as a tale of youthful honor.
The book's title refers to the beautiful silver skates to be awarded to the winner of the ice-skating race Hans Brinker hopes to enter. The novel introduced the sport of Dutch speed skating to Americans, and Hans Brinker is still considered the prototypical speedskater. The book also gave us the story of the little Dutch boy who plugs a dike with his finger.
I have looked everywhere and can't find an identical copy of this book.
It is undated but, because of the style of illustrations and type, I'm dating it at 1925. Published by Grosset & Dunlap as part of the Companion Library.
It is blue boards heavily etched with a black design—on both covers and the spine. 336 pages, all clean and clear, although starting to darken.… Read More

Description:
This is a first edition (UK) of Haroun and the Sea of Stories, a children's novel written in 1990 by the British writer Salman Rushdie. After Iran's Ayatollah Khomeni issued a fatwa against Rushdie over The Satanic Verses
two years earlier, Rushdie was in hiding, and under protection. This meant that he was separated from his son, and he wrote these stories for him. The boy was 12 at the time. It is a phantasmagorical story that begins in a city so old and ruinous that it has forgotten its name, and it is an allegory for problems that exist in society, from the viewpoint of the young Haroun. The dust jacket (unclipped) of this copy has minor shelfwear, mostly yellowing of the white corners on the inside flaps and back. The book itself (218 pages) does not appear to have been read. There is a faint mark on the front cover--it's not a scratch and may come off. The outside of the pages edges have darkened a little. Otherwise perfect.
