Description:
In nine chapters, The Golden Scarecrow presents nine stories of nine children, united by location. A tenth story of a tenth life, divided into Prologue and Epilogue, provides a different sort of unity. They are both gentle and horrible tales.
This book is an exercise in entering into the minds/hearts of children
The premise is that children come into this world with a knowledge of the world they have left behind and a spiritual link to it through a companion just referred to as their Friend. Some adults are able to mature without losing their Friend and some children push him away when they are still small. It needs the heart of a child and a willingness to believe in things we can't see.
Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884 - 1941) was one of the most popular authors of his time. He wrote 36 novels, and five volumes of short stories; his most famous novel is Rogue Herries.
The Golden Scarecrow was first published by Cassell in 1915, then the copyright was transferred to MacMillan.

Description:
This is a first edition (UK) of Haroun and the Sea of Stories, a children's novel written in 1990 by the British writer Salman Rushdie. After Iran's Ayatollah Khomeni issued a fatwa against Rushdie over The Satanic Verses
two years earlier, Rushdie was in hiding, and under protection. This meant that he was separated from his son, and he wrote these stories for him. The boy was 12 at the time. It is a phantasmagorical story that begins in a city so old and ruinous that it has forgotten its name, and it is an allegory for problems that exist in society, from the viewpoint of the young Haroun. The dust jacket (unclipped) of this copy has minor shelfwear, mostly yellowing of the white corners on the inside flaps and back. The book itself (218 pages) does not appear to have been read. There is a faint mark on the front cover--it's not a scratch and may come off. The outside of the pages edges have darkened a little. Otherwise perfect.

While the attendees see actual films, the critic's ghost sees films detailing the lives of his ancestors—one was a Tory during the American Revolution, another who was a carpenter who married a blue-blooded woman. The films deal with more and more recent subjects until the novel is brought to a modern-day conclusion.

Anatole France (Francois-Anatole Thibault, 1844-1924) was a French poet, journalist and best-selling novelist. He was considered the ideal French man of letters and, in 1921, won the Nobel Prize in Literature.France wrote 25 novels; Penguin Island (1908) was his 21st.
It is a sprawling satirical novel about a fictitious island, inhabited by great auks, that existed off the northern coast of Europe. A wayward Christian missionary monk lands on the island and sees the upright, unafraid auks as a sort of pre-Christian society of noble pagans. Mostly blind from reflections from the polar ice and deaf from the roar of the sea, having mistaken the animals for humans, he baptizes them. This causes a problem for The Lord, who normally only allows humans to be baptized. After consulting with saints and theologians in Heaven, He resolves the dilemma by converting the baptized birds to humans with only a few physical traces of their ornithological origin, and giving them each a soul. Thus begins the… Read More

Description:
Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban (1561 – 1626) was an English philosopher and statesman who served as Attorney General, as Lord Chancellor of England and as legal advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. His works are credited with developing the scientific method and remained influential through the scientific revolution.
Bacon argued for the possibility of scientific knowledge based only upon inductive reasoning and careful observation of events in nature. Most importantly, he argued science could be achieved by use of a skeptical and methodical approach whereby scientists aim to avoid misleading themselves. Although his practical ideas about such a method, the Baconian method, did not have a long-lasting influence, the general idea of the importance and possibility of a skeptical methodology makes Bacon the father of the scientific method.
Bacon published three volumes of essays; the last contained 58 essays—all are contained in this book. It also contains his famous The New Atlantis, an incomplete… Read More
