Description:
This is a first edition of Classic Hand Tools, by the American cabinetmaker Garrett Hack.
From a review: "Garrett Hack feels that his hand tools have become extensions of himself and are linked with what he makes and how he makes it. He also believes that learning about hand tools and how to use them is part of the pleasure to be gotten from working with wood.Hack's presentation of hand tools is organized according to their normal purposes: boring, sawing, planing, marking and measuring, striking and chiseling and he provides historical insights into the development of the more common hand tools. For example, "Striking Tools" starts with axes and hatchets and moves through twybills and throes to mallets and hammers.
Each major section surveys numerous variants of the class of tools being dealt with, and covers use, maintenance, sharpening and tuning. As a bonus, most sections contain informative sidebars providing advice and tips from the master. He includes explanations and discussion of tools and… Read More

There are copies available in Europe; in North America, it's quite rare.It was first published in 1973. Sparkes revised and updated it and it was reprinted, in soft cover, in 1977. This is one of those revised copies. The back cover text reads "From the Chiltern beechwoods to the markets, and thus to the homes of the world, came the English Chair, designed, developed and built by a rare breed of craftsmen. This is their story, illustrated with many original photographs, describing the history of a living English craft." 6 1/4" x 8 1/2" soft cover.160 pages including loads of photographs. The original owner read it to page 19, put a little dogear on the page and did not read it further. The cover show shelfwear at the edges; the remains of the price tag are still on the front. The inside is perfect.

Description:
This is the first/only printing of Highland Bagpipe Makers, Second Edition by the Scottish historian Jeannie Campbell. The first edition was a best-seller; in this edition, she finds more bagpipe makers, expands on previously published information, and adds more illstrations. There is also a new section on people were were bagpipe makers but worked for others, and there is more information on materials.
This is a $50 book but it has had a spill. At the front of the book, there is waving to the pages, there are a few stained pages, and two pages are stuck together, at the bottom corner. Otherwise fine.

Description:
This is a first edition, first printing, of Progressive Lessons in Machine Shop Practice, Book I. It was produced as a textbook by Harry A Jones, Machine Shop Instructor at Vancouver Technical School, and the title page states that it was authorized for use in the schools of British Columbia. However, it quickly became an international best-seller and was used in schools throughout the world--this copy was purchased in the UK. See table of contents photo: everything covered is illustrated. This copy is in superb condition. 172 pages, only slightly yellowed with age. The paper is fine and smooth. The fading you see in the photos only appears in photos. There are a couple of fingerprints. Two students signed the book, one at the front, one at the back. Other than that, it is perfect. And all still relevant to woodworkers and cabinetmakers.

Description:
Henry O. Studley (1838–1925) was a New England organ and piano maker, carpenter and stonemason who built a very famous mahogany cabinet for 250 of his tools. His cabinet and workbench are privately owned and this book is the only way of seeing Studley's masterpiece.
This book is the first in-depth examination of one of the most beautiful woodworking tool chests ever constructed and presents the first-ever biography of Studley. It explains how be built it, how it works, and why he made it in the first place. It includes measurements, details and photographs of all the tools in the cabinet. Every swinging frame, hinged panel and nook of this three-dimensional, multi-layered sculpture has been analyzed so you can understand how it folds in on itself like a giant piece of mahogany origami.
Second printing, 204 pages, full of beautiful photography and on fine paper. The book is heavy--over 2 lbs. Pages 38 and 39 somehow got stuck together and have a little mark on them as a result. There is a slight wave… Read More

Description:
Charles H. Hayward (1898-1998) was the most important workshop writer and editor of the 20th century. He was a cabinetmaker, illustrator, designer, writer, editor and photographer. As editor of The Woodworker magazine from 1939 to 1967, Hayward oversaw the transformation of the craft from one that was almost entirely hand-tool based to a time where machines were common, inexpensive and had displaced the handplanes, chisels and backsaws of Hayward's training and youth.
Some of what Hayward published was gathered together in five books. This is one of those books, Volume IV, The Shop and Furniture. It covers the design and construction of workbenches, tool chests and wall cabinets. There's also a section devoted to workshop accessories such as shooting boards. It covers Furniture & Details, including the important Western furniture styles, and their construction, mouldings and metal hardware. This section also includes the construction drawings for many important and famous pieces of furniture examined… Read More
