Short inscription from previous owner describing the circumstances of purchasing the book; otherwise clean, with minimal wear. Useful, comprehensive history of the city of Sault Ste. Marie (settlement, industry, citizens, etc) from the 18th century to the present.

1862. Softcover. Very good. Sewn pamphlet, 24 pp, printed in double columns. Minor insect damage, still a very good copy. A speech in opposition to the Second Confiscation Act, which called for court proceedings for seizure of land and property from disloyal citizens (ie, supporters of the Confederacy) in the South as well as the emancipation of their slaves that came under Union control. Davis was a vehement opponent of confiscation and made repeated and lengthy speeches in the Senate in an attempt to derail the legislation. It passed in July 1862, providing the legal basis for the Emancipation Proclamation.

Full text of the address made by Robert S. McNamara at the University of Chicago, May 22, 1979, upon receiving the Albert Pick, Jr. Award. McNamara defends the position that "No nation can avoid the responsibility of providing an appropriate and reasonable level of defense for its society....But what is just as necessary is to understnad that the concept of security encompasses far more than merely military force, and that a society can reach a point at which additional military expenditure no loner provides additional security."

Cambridge, [MA]: Press of John Wilson and Son, 1877. Hardcover. Very good. Issued as part of the Collections of the Maine Historical Society, Second Series. Edited by Leonard Woods and Charles Deane. lxi + 253 pp, indexed, with several folding facsimiles of handwritten documents. A very good copy, mostly unopened, with some light foxing, faint staining to lower spine. This is first publication of Richard Hakluyt's 1584 manuscript discussing the lands of the New World and advocating colonization by the English. Originally a confidential state paper, it was presented to Queen Elizabeth I on October 3, 1584. The present text comes from the only surviving copy. Haklyut argues that the English should settle the New World in order to preempt other Europeans -- particularly the Spanish -- from monopolizing trade.

Very small stain to fore edge (likely a printer's error), else a fine copy in like jacket. Signed on the front free endpaper by Perissinotto and dated October 30, 1988. A collection of 52 documents (translated into English) from the Santa Barbara Presidio, the last of Alta California's four military garrisons, offering insight into how early settlers survived on the far frontier of Spain's American empire.

First two pages loosening from rest of text block but not detached. Speeches delivered in the months leading up to the passage of the Coinage Act in June 1834. The brief publisher's introduction notes: "Upon reading through the whole of these occasional speeches of Mr. Webster, they appear to treat the subject of currency so clearly, and to state its importance, not then so generally felt as it now is, so fully, and they show so far-sighted and perfect a discernment of the consequences of the measures which Government was at the time pursuing, that is has been thought useful to make a small collection of extracts of these several performances, and to publish them together."
