Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1897. Hardcover. Very good. Second and preferred edition, with folding map. 25.5 cm, 283 pp. in original pictorial cloth boards, beautifully illustrated with 25 full-page photogravures and many additional illustrations in the text. Boards are lightly spotted, but still quite attractive; internally clean and sound. The topographical map, titled "Map of the Lake Louise Region Showing Part of the Summit Range of the Canadian Rocky Mountains" is laid in at the front and is in fine condition. The author was an early explorer of the Canadian Rockies who made several first ascents, including Temple, Aberdeen, Niblock, and Indefatigable. In a 1941 article in the American Alpine Journal, climber J. Henry Scattergood described the book as "delightful," praising Wilcox's "exquisite descriptions of Lake Louise, Valley of the Ten Peaks (then called by him Desolation Valley) and neighborhood." More recently, Zac Robinson and Stephen Slemon wrote in Alpinist magazine (No. 50, 2015)… Read More

Description:
Watertown, NY. 4 pp on a single folded sheet, 8.5 x 11 inches when folded. Undated, but reprints an article from The American Mining News, August, 1901. Old creases from folding, staple holes at upper corner, all else very good. Dunbar, a broker, appeals to Americans for investment in this Canadian mining region, because "Canadians, besides lacking the mining experience, are too slow to take advantage of the golden opportunities which are being grasped by the more venturesome Americans." The Rainy River District, he says "possess advantages over almost every other gold mining country in the world," due to easily worked ores and ready access to fuel, water, transportation, and labor. There was apparently something to these claims, as the area is seeing a resurgence in commercial mining activity today. Not found in OCLC.

Toronto: William Briggs, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 515 pp, illustrated. Subscribers' edition, in navy blue cloth with Hudson's Bay Company crest on the front cover. Some rubbing to extremities, binding tight, text clean. Bison Books edition description: "The Hudson's Bay Company had been operating for nearly two centuries when young Isaac Cowie joined it in 1867. He sailed from the Shetland Islands to Rupert's Land, finally reaching York Factory, where he awaited his assignment. Company of Adventurers describes the early, lusty history of the HBC and the years of Cowie's service, when manufactured goods were driving out the demand for furs and buffalo hides. It contains rare information about the Assiniboin and Plains Crees Indians during the period before their confinement to reservations. Alive to the historical and ethnographic value of his writing, Cowie tells about his tenure as a clerk (later manager) at Fort Qu'Appelle in southern Saskatchewan, the colorful personalities who… Read More

Third edition (issued in the same year as the first edition). x, 388 pp, with folding map (as frontispiece) and 6 plates, in original dark red cloth with decoration in black and gilt. Spine slanted, map has some creasing from being mis-folded, contemporary owner's signature on title page. Text and plates clean. "Butler's accounts of his adventures are the most poetic and the most personable of the 19th-century Canadian travel narratives. His lyrical descriptions of landscape, climate and seasonal change testify to his deep admiration for the sheer, unpopulated expanse and beauty of the Canadian West. Sent by the English in 1870 to gather intelligence about the Red River Resistance, Butler actually met with Louis Riel at Ft Garry; his description of the encounter remains one of the most vivid portraits of Riel in our literature" (Canadian Encyclopedia).

Hind's exploration of the country between Lake Superior and the Rocky Mountains was prompted by the need for a land access to the gold fields of British Columbia, as well as the possible establishment of a railway route to the Pacific Coast. His narrative provides a wealth of information about customs, beliefs, and condition of the native peoples. Description:
Toronto: C. Blackett Robinson, 1881. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 32 pp, in original printed wrappers. Light dust soiling, front wrapper has previous owner's name written at the top and one small tear; very good. Sir Francis Hincks (1807-1885) was a Canadian businessman, politician, and British colonial administrator. In 1878, he represented the federal government on the Ontario-Manitoba boundary commission. The commission's decision, which was favorable to Ontario, was subject to intense criticism and was not been adopted by the newly elected federal government. In this pamphlet, Himcks reviews the complex history of the boundary question, defends the work of the commission, and argues that the government must either accept and adopt the award that had been made or formally appeal it. Ultimately, an appeal was made and the award was upheld by the Privy Council in Britain in 1884.

Very good. 7" x 11" string-tied album containing 190 corner-mounted photos., most measuring 3.25" x 5.5". Some blank spots where photos were removed, a few images damaged, but condition is very good overall. This interesting album appears to have been compiled by a man from Calgary, Alberta, who was employed in the railroad industry before serving in the military -- possibly the Royal Canadian Engineers -- during World War I. An "M. Jeffrey" appears several times in the album, and we suspect (but have not been able to confirm) that he was the compiler. The first section of the album includes many good photographs of the locomotives, cars, tracks, depots, dams, and bridges (some under construction) of the Canadian Pacific, Grand Trunk Pacific, and Canadian Northern Railways. There are several shots of Banff and the Rockies, before a transition into Calgary images, which include downtown buildings, streets, the interior of the city power house, and a remarkable street scene showing the hustle and… Read More

Folio, 486 pp, with one folding map (not related to the Hudson's Bay report), in a later binding of quarter leather and marbled boards. Each report has its own title page, but a title page for the full volume is lacking; otherwise a fine copy. According to ESTC (N69513), four volumes of these committee reports were officially ordered to be printed on 28 June, 1773, and were published in 1774-1776. They were reprinted, along with 11 additional volumes and an index, between 1803 and 1820. The 1803 reprint of this report is commonly found, but this 1776 edition is scarce. See Peel 26, TPL 213. In 1749, the House of Commons appointed a committee of enquiry into the lands and trade of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC).
