Description:
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1907. Hardcover. Very good. Second impression of Conrad's first novel, originally published in 1895. Original green cloth stamped in gilt. A very good copy with some rubbing to extremities, small white spot on front board, bookplate of Alfred Fowler on front pastedown. Publisher's description from the Dover edition: "The tale of a man's inability to escape his self-delusion and the tragic results that ensue, Almayer's Folly unfolds with the lush prose and keen psychological insights for which its author is renowned. Set in nineteenth-century Borneo, the novel recounts the brief rise and protracted fall of Kaspar Almayer, a Dutch merchant who has struggled for 25 years to practice his trade in the jungle. Only his daughter, Nina, brightens Almayer's embittered marriage to a Malayan, and he dreams of their triumphant return to civilization — a fantasy undermined by Almayer's own greed and prejudice. This tale of personal tragedy offers a wider perspective on the disastrous… Read More

Description:
New York: Heron Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 199 pp + illustrations, with frontispiece. A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Rather than being numbered, this copy is designated "B" and was presumably an author's presentation copy, as it is additionally inscribed (without salutation) "with best wishes for a successful year with the N.Y. Soc. for Sup. of Vice / from [name uncertain] and myself / Erskine Caldwell." It seems likely that this inscription dates from a few years after the publication date. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Apparently the recipient of this copy didn't care to actually read the book, as many of the pages… Read More

Softcover. Near fine. No publication information given. Facsimile of a 1923 manuscript, 6 leaves, illustrated. 6.75 x 5 inches (17 x 12 cm). Stapled and tied with silk cord. Very slight handling wear; near fine. The bibliographic history of this title is a bit confusing, as it was issued under two different false imprints, but to the best of our knowledge this is one of the 100 original copies printed in Leipzig in 1940 or 41 (different references give different years), some of which had a bogus imprint of "Philadelphia, 1940" and others of which, like this one, had no imprint. The title translates to "Considerations on Fat and Thin Women.
