Description:
Portland, Oregon: Davidson Photo, 1883. Very good. 5.5" x 8" albumen photograph on a 9.25" x 12" mount. Titled "Cabinet Gorge, Clark's River, looking down stream," with further caption for the series: "Scenery Along the Line of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company, Clarke's Fork Division." Credited "Davidson, Photo. Portland, Oregon." Very good condition, with small chips at corners of mount, contrast a bit light. This series of views was apparently taken to celebrate and promote the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Construction had begun in Minnesota in 1870, and the final section was completed on September 8, 1883. An article published in the Helena [Montana] Semi-Weekly Herald on July 19, 1883, reports that "Mr. Ed Stone, General Agent of the Land Department of the Northern Pacific Railroad, is the possessor of a large album of views entitled "Oregon and the Pacific Northwest." Glimpses of pretty sports along the valley of the Columbia River from northern Montana to the Pacific… Read More

Description:
Softcover. Very good. Hand-made calendar composed of 12 sheets of 7" x 5.25" cardstock, two-hole punched at top for hanging. Small printed calendar page affixed to each sheet below an original cyanotype photograph measuring about 3.25" x 4.5" (sizes vary slightly). Most photos have a penciled caption written on the back of the card. Front page toned and has some rubbed spots, otherwise very good. Each page of this calendar shows a different view of the town of South Royalton, Massachusetts, with several labeled as "before fire" or "after fire." The fire, dubbed "The Great Fire of 1904" in local histories, occurred on October 25, 1904. It started in an outbuilding of the Whitney Woolen Mill Co. and ultimately destroyed a bridge, church, schoolhouse, grocery store, and several private homes. The calendar includes images of the Mill, "the new dam," village streets, "the old homestead" (presumably the home of the photographer), the railroad track and houses above it, and the bridge, church, and… Read More

Description:
Softcover. Very good. 7" x 11" strong-tied photograph album containing 35 snapshots (3.5" x 5") corner-mounted one per page, rectos only. A small album without captions, but with good documentary content. The first two images are a nice Juneau street scene and a shot of the Alaska Air Transport Terminal in the Juneau harbor. These are followed by some rural scenes showing country roads and houses that we suspect are outside Juneau, and several shots of a terminal where cargo is being either loaded from rail car to ship, or vice versa. From there, three shots show a ship's passage, presumably across the Gulf of Alaska from Juneau to Kodiak, as the remainder of the images (20+) seem to be from Kodiak. There are several nice images of the Kodiak dock and harbor, several of a rural road and house, a view looking down at the town from a hillside, and many shots of the beautiful Russian Orthodox church.

Description:
Album containing eleven 7"x 9" professional linen-backed photographs showing the process and results of installing new street lights along a main commercial thoroughfare in Hamilton, Ohio. Hamilton is the county seat of Butler County, about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. In the early twentieth century, "the town was a heavy manufacturing center for vaults and safes, machine tools, cans for vegetables, paper, paper making machinery, locomotives, frogs and switches for railroads, steam engines, diesel engines, foundry products, printing presses, and automobile parts" (wiki). The photos show wide streets lined with businesses which, with the advent of increased automobile traffic, were undoubtedly eager for the most modern and effective methods of illumination. A wonderful set of facing night views shows how much brighter the new lights are. An additional 16 snapshots photos are laid into the album, most showing people posing with what appear to be temporary streetlights. Five were taken in front of the… Read More

Description:
Carte de visite photograph of Frances Coryell (here spelled Coryel), "a Hindoo girl buried alive by her heathen parents," sold to raise funds for the Women's Foreign Missionary Society. The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society was a Protestant woman's missionary organization founded by Methodists in Boston in 1869. The story of Frances Coryell (raised in an orphanage, nursed by a goat, now learning to sing hymns) is told on the back of the card by Clementina Butler, a missionary to India and zealous supporter of the Society. By 1870, a woman in Ithaca, NY, had taken up Frances's cause and was paying for her education. Although you could purchase one for 25 cents in 1869, we have only seen one other example of this card. That one was credited on the verso to H.P. Chapman of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Description:
Twenty-seven (27) 8" x 10" photographs showcasing high-end vehicles for rent from the Iowa Garage in Pasadana, California, owned by former race car mechanic Eugene Lajunie (b. 1885). Each photo is accompanied by a typed caption giving the model number, color, some specifications, and the price per day to rent with a driver. Vehicles include many touring cars and cabriolets made by Renault, Packard, and Daimler; a Sunbeam roadster, town cars, taxis, a limousine, army trucks, a French truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun, and several remarkable "camera cars" made with front or rear-mounted platforms to hold movie cameras and their operators. Rental prices ranged from $35/day for a camera car to $75/day for the Sunbeam Roadster or a 1926 Renault cabriolet. Many of the cars are "posed" in front of beautiful homes on tree-lined Pasadena streets. These photographs would originally have been in a sales catalogue or album, and there are remnants of the original pages on which they were mounted on the back… Read More

A good copy with creasing and chipping to wrappers, one crack in binding. Most date from the period between the establishment of the Republic in 1923 and Atatürk's death in 1938, but there are some earlier images included. Born in 1881 in Salonika in what was then the Ottoman Empire, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was sent to military school and the military academy in Istanbul, graduating in 1905. Description:
Very good. Four photograph albums containing a total of 558 mounted images documenting military training and service in Japan in 1920s and 30s, all in very good condition. Although we acquired these albums together, they appear to have belonged to different people. Most, if not all, were officers. One album has handwritten captions, the others do not, but do have some group photographs with captions in the negative. Two identity documents are tipped in to one album that, we are told, are for people with the family names Yokoo and Hayashi. During the interwar years, Japanese culture was pervaded by the conviction that a strong military was the solution to most problems, foreign and domestic. The Army enjoyed considerable independence from the civilian government, and various factions within the military played a major role in directing the country's foreign policy. As described by historian David Hunter-Chester in The Culture of Military Organizations, (Cambridge, 2019) the Imperial Japanese Army's… Read More

Description:
11" x 14" photograph showing members of the American Samoan Delegation--headed by famed Machu PIcchu explorer Hiram Bingham--being received by local chiefs, as a Samoan man films the proceedings. A slightly different version of this image (with the Samoan photographer removed) was published in a 1931 U.S. Government report with the caption "County Chiefs Leiato of Fagaitua and Faumunia of Aunuu Entertain Commission at Fagaitua." The Delegation, which also included Rep. Guinn Williams, Sen. Joseph T. Robinson, and Rep. Carroll L. Beedy, was there to hear the grievances of Samoans living under U.S. Naval Administration governance and to determine whether to make changes to American policy and procedures. Photographer Merl LaVoy (1886-1953) was present as a cameraman for British newsreel producer Pathé News. LaVoy is well known for his photographs of indigenous life in the Solomon Islands, the Philippines, China, and Alaska, as well as for films he made for the American Red Cross following World War I.… Read More
