Original brown cloth, worn at spine ends. Small bookplate ("Marcy Mills") and bookseller's label on front pastedown, another label partially removed from rear pastedown, part of rear free endpaper lacking. Binding tight, text clean, pages somewhat tanned. Wagner-Camp (410): "Samuel Bowles and his party left Atchison, Kansas on May 21, 1865 for San Francisco by way of Salt Lake and across central Nevada, stopping at Austin and Virginia City. They reached the Pacific at the end of June, and traveled overland up the the coast to British Columbia, returning to San Francisco by steamer. They visited Yosemite in August, and were back in New York by the end of September. This book is composed of Bowles's letters to the 'Springfield Republican', revised and expanded." Lettering and illustration on cloth boards is quite faded, one crack in binding, scattered foxing, old dampstain and private library embossed stamp visible on title page. Good. Neate M03: "His own account of Conway's 1892 Karakoram Expedition. McCormick was a landscape artist and watercolorist who illustrated Conway's alpine books and other mountaineering books." McCormick describes his book in the preface as "a more personal narrative" in which he has "attemped to give an ida of the picturesque aspect of the expedition rather than of the geographical portion.

Very good. xi, 428 pp + publisher's ads, with two lithographed plates before the title page, showing Rio de Janiero and Catete, Original red cloth binding, with chipping to cloth at base of spine, light wear to edges. Internally sound and clean. Reverend Charles Samuel Stewart (1795-1870) served as missionary in to the Sandwich Islands from 1823 to 1825. In 1828, he became a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy. He served in various places, including: on the U.S.S. Brandywine from 1841 to 1842, a hospital in New York from 1847 to 1848, on the U.S.S. Congress from 1851 to 1853, and on the steam frigate Niagara from 1861 to 1862. This book recounts his time on the Congress, which was assigned to the Brazil Squadron with the mission of protecting United States interests from the Amazon to Cape Horn. Borba de Moraes p. 288.

Original red cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Spinelightly sunned, a bit of scattered foxing, attractive engraved bookplate (identifying the owner simply as "Alexandra") on the front pastedown. Cameron traveled extensively and generally alone, publishing books on Africa, South America, Mexico, and the South Seas, among others. Although she has been described by some critics as more of a globetrotting tourist than an explorer (see Robinson p. 177 and the DNB) she was elected to membership in the Royal Geographical Society in 1913, suggesting her contemporaries, at least, felt otherwise. Grace Thompson Seton (b. 1872) was the author of many travel books, several of which recounted her adventures hunting big game, fishing, and collecting specimens in the American and Canadian West with her naturalist husband Ernest Thompson. Later, she became an advocate for women's rights and traveled internationally to learn about the condition of women abroad. This book recounts her trip to China, during which she took pains to meet with women of various levels of influence and education and to describe how the role of women in Chinese society was changing, and where she felt reforms were needed.

Emily Georgiana Kemp (1860-1939) was a British adventurer, artist and writer who travelled in China, Korea, India, Central Asia and the Amazon.
