ALS in pen on the recto of a bifolium, to an unknown recipient. Written from Little Warwick Street; the date is Dec 21, 1782. Conway suggests that regiments heading for Jamaica should "if possible touch at Barbados". He expresses concern about the accommodation of troops, mentioning the Carolina Garrison. Signed: "H.S. Conway". Titled on the verso of the second leaf: "Dec 21, 1782 / Genl. Conway". Old stains and discoloration, quite severe, several horizontal folds, but intact. Conway had held the post of Commander-In-Chief of the Forces since March of 1782; he would be promoted to Field Marshall in October of 1793.

Contemporary boards, corners quite worn, rebacked with a brown cloth spine and new end papers sometime in the late 20th century, from the look of it. Complete with 39 plates printed on 38 sheets (one is a double), of which several are folding. Subjects include spinning and weaving. Some faint library stamps on the initial few and final leaves, quite heavily foxed in the early numbers, cleaner toward the rear of the volume. There are a few short tears in margins, pages are quite yellowed and brittle, generally a very good copy.

In addition to being issued in parts, the work was issued in clothbound divisions containing part of the text, and 24 plates apiece. Binding is the original plum blind-stamped cloth, spines designed and lettered in gilt, both covers designed in gilt with an image of a native archer. Pale yellow coated end papers. Some mild chipping at the spine ends, some foxing to margins, but plates are clean. The first few leaves of Division I are loose. Divisions I and V contain the decorative title pages for the work; at the end of Division V are bound the preface, the printed title pages, the contents and lists of engravings, and two leaves of ads (which include an ad for American Scenery: "Now publishing, to be completed in Thirty Parts at One Shilling, or in Divisions, 7s. 6d., cloth gilt").
