cat40a. Boston: Arena, 1893. Reprint - first published in Philadelphia by Miller Publications, 1892. Green cloth, spine and front cover designed and lettered in gilt. Tan patterned end papers. Paper browning, some light shelf wear, a few pencil notes, in general a bright very good copy. Laid in is a publisher's ad leaflet which contains an outline sketch of the novel. A utopian tale, set in the Philadelphia of 1950. This Arena edition is very uncommon.

Stuttgart, etc.: Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, [c.1910].. Green pictorial cloth lettered in gilt, designed in black and dark green. Two leaves have some wrinkles and short tears to the margins, small worn spot at base of spine, but in general a bright and attractive copy. Frontispiece and many illustrations by Gustav Dore.

Philadelphia: Lippincott, (Copyright 1871, but bound ca.1880). . Original brown pictorial cloth with a floral design, spine and front cover designed and lettered in black, the spine titled ("Eva's Adventures") on a panel of gilt. The end papers bear publisher's advertisments. One leaf of ads at the rear. The two works bound together, separately paginated (169 + 117). Ownership signature on the half-title leaf, inner hinges are cracked, in general a clean very good copy. There exists an illustrated edition of these two stories which was published by Lippincott in 1874, in the Enchanting Fairy Library. (The plates in the Nauman work have a distinctly Alice-in-Wonderland flavour to them). The Guernsey work was published by Lippincott in 1871 in an illustrated edition titled: "The Merman and the Figure-Head: A Christmas Story". London: Hutchinson, [1947]. First edition. Blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's name in gold script on lower front cover. Browning to end leaves, but a fine copy in a slightly worn pictorial dust jacket. Lost-race adventure of the familiar variety - a race in the Amazon ruled by a white queen.

A bright and attractive very good copy. Connected incidents in the life of Ingleson, some are humorous and marginally fantastic. A nice, clean copy. Missed by Smith, AMERICAN FICTION, though it is surely fictional.

NY: Robert J Shores, 1918. First edition.. cat40a. Blue cloth lettered in red. Frontispiece & 3 plates. Some shelf wear, a bit dusty, name written on front end papers, a very good copy. In the series: R.J.S. Mystery Stories. Listed in Hubin. Smith S-970. Also this novel contains an element of science fiction: "Sky High", a new explosive.

London: Tinsley, 1884. First edition.. cat40a. Original blue-green pictorial cloth, front cover designed in black, spine lettered in gilt. Yellow end papers. 328pp. + 32pp. publisher's catalogue at the rear. Shelf wear to corners and spine ends, rear inner hinge cracking, front inner hinge mostly cracked, text block split mostly apart in the middle; in general, a decent, very good copy otherwise. A peculiar mixture of tales, framed by a city man's visit to the countryside of England, includes some fantastic parts including odd inventions , an attack by an organized army of apes, a sea monster, and a science fiction episode purporting to be from "The Times for 1983". A scarce book.

Paris: Gissey, etc., 1739. First edition.. cat40a. 12mo. [160]pp. Full contemporary calf, spine decorated and lettered in gilt. Marbled end papers. A very good copy, scattered foxing throughout. Published in English in 1739 as: "A philosophical amusement upon the language of beasts", this work was censured, and led to the author being imprisoned, then exiled from Paris for a time.

cat40a. NY: Henry Holt, 1914. First edition. [352]pp. + 10pp. ads at rear. Blue cloth designed and lettered in white. Frontispiece in color, and one double-page plate by John Rae. Internally a decent copy, with only light soiling to a couple of pages, but the binding is very rubbed and quite soiled. The white lettering and design is virtually all gone, and the cloth is grubby. So, not a great copy, but a scarce book these days. Shipwrecked men on an unknown island discover a race of winged women. Reginald 05998. Bleiler, Science Fiction: The Early Years: 892. Reprinted in 1988, with an into by Ursula K. Leguin.

The Pioneers start a utopian colony at the end.

A clean, nearly fine copy in a slightly used dust jacket, a bit of rubbing along hinges and light chipping to spine ends. An interplanetary novel, of the planet Aster. Reginald 15733.

Stories by 22 authors including Frank Baker, James Hanley, Pamela Hansford Johnson, William Sansom, John Heath-Stubbs, Norah Lofts, et al.

Boston: Eastern Publishing Company, (1902). First edition.. cat40a. Red cloth designed in silver and dark blue. A bit of wear to spine extremities, but quite a bright, very good copy. A utopian novel in which millionaires construct an artificial island near New York.

[Berkeley]: University of California Chronicle, 1926. First edition. Grey printed wrappers, stapled. A clean, nearly fine copy. Inscribed and signed by Pratt on the title page, dated 1927. This is an offprint from The University of California Chronicle, October, 1926; it is paginated 354 - 361. Quite scarce. Pratt was born in Wisconsin but lived and worked mainly in California. He wrote for the pulp magazines, including Weird Tales and Argosy, and was editor at The Overland Monthly, as well as Art Critic for the San Francisco Chronicle. This is a long narrative poem of mythic Atlantis, told by an immortal survivor of the cataclysm - a tragic and romantic tale including forbidden love, human sacrifice, and the final destruction of Atlantis by the sea!

Ownership inscription on front fly leaf dated 1911, some old stains, wear and rubbing to front cover, a few pages opened carelessly, very good otherwise. Smith: American Fiction 1901-1925: V-122. A curious novel touching on spiritualism, religion and philosophy, and with a significant component of telepathy and telepathic communication. Very scarce.

A descriptive leaf from the publisher, about the book, is laid in at page 9, and has caused yellowing of the adjacent pages. SF novel in which a meteorite strikes the Earth, causing a new island to rise. Bleiler: Science-Fiction: The Early Years: 854.

cat40a. NY & London: Neely, (1899). First edition. Patterned wrappers designed and lettered in black Corners of wrappers chipped, spine faced with tissue paper (perhaps to reattach covers), old stain in the margin of a few leaves; a very good copy otherwise. Also issued in cloth. This was number 5 in the Neely's Booklet Library series. A curious collection of short stories; the title story is a satirical utopian tale set in an imaginary country.
