Originally published in W.Germany in 1946 as, 'Gefangnistagebuch', and translated into English in 1987 by Michael Hulse. One of the first books published in Germany after the war, this is the moving prison diary of a young German widow and mother of two children, who was denounced by a 'friend' in 1944, arrested, and sent to the womens' prison at Traunstein in Bavaria. With a keen eye for the vagaries of human nature, the author observed her guards and fellow inmates, jotting down notes and expecting nothing but death every day. She survived, however, and the end result is this justly regarded classic of modern prison literature, giving a glimpse of life for anti-Nazis within Hitler's Germany.
