New York: M. Young, Publisher, 1882. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, brown cloth boards with gilt on front. Exterior shows quite a bit of fading and soiling along with sunning to spine and edge bumps. Internal binding is good. Pages are toned due to age and foxing is present throughout. Orange end pages and front and rear are free of any handwriting, signatures or bookplates. This book actually contains three different titles - the first being "600 Ways to Get Rich When Your Pockets are Empty" (94 pp.), next numbered section is entitled "The Horse" (98 pp.) and the last numbered section is entitled "The Toilet" (115 pp.). The small section of the interior pages are bound slightly offset and seen in the photo of the exterior page edges.

New York: Matthceus(?) Reichert, 1861. Hardcover. VG-. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, brown cloth boards quarter bound with leather to spine. Exterior shows spotting and soiling as well as edge and corner wear. There are a few small holes in the cloth and the rear board has a circular stain in the center. The internal binding is good, except for some minor pulling in the section of offset pages that starts around page 203. The front pastedown contains an inscription stating this was from the Library of the Redemptorists Fathers, and the title page contains a stamp stating "Redemptorist Library, St. Alphonsus Church of New Orleans. There is also a very faint stamp near the lower outside corner of the same page. Various degrees of foxing is present throughout with some pages being very minor and others showing quite a bit. Philadelphia, PA: The Times Publishing Company, 1892. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Poor. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, full leather binding decorated on front with portrait of Lincoln. The book is in poor shape with both the front and rear boards detached, most of spine is missing. The internal binding is complete though the front decorated end page is also detached. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings present. Remaining pages are secure though paper is toned due to age. First edition thus with a single date of 1892 appearing on the title and copyright pages with no additional printings listed. Tissue guard to frontispiece is still present and attached. All exterior page edges gilt. This book is in rough shape and is basically in pieces, but is complete. As a first edition this is a good candidate for rebinding.

New York: The Catholic Publication Society, 1871. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, green stamped boards with gilt to spine. Both front and rear boards show quite a bit of wear to the outside fore edges, could be caused by handling or dampstaining. This is an ex-library copy, showing a 29th century bookplate on the front pastedown along with a stamp on the title page showing it came from the Redemptorist library, St. Alphonsus Church of New Orleans. No other markings noted. Binding is good, no hinge cracks, no torn or loose pages. Foxing is present with the worst appearing on the end pages as well as exterior page edges.

Richmond, VA: William F. Ritchie, Public Printer, 1858. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather with black label to spine. Exterior shows wear and soiling in leather is frayed and peeling to the finish. Internal binding is good other than some minor pulling. Pages are lightly tone due to age and some foxing and spotting is present with the worst being the end pages. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or library markings present. Laws include several sections on slaves and ownership, an interesting section on what defines a militia (pages 33 - 37) stating it is to be organized to provide for the defense of the commonwealth with officers and regiments, brigades etc. This is the original publication from 1858, not a modern reprint.

Richmond, VA: Samuel Shepherd - Printer to Commonwealth, 1848. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather. Exterior is quite worn in leather to spine is brittle with sections missing at the top and bottom, leather is cracked at both boards which are held on only by the binder string. Overall interior binding is good though pages 235 through 238 are protruding a bit and have some wiggle to them. Page 239 has a corner fold which has been straightened out. Paper is toned due to age and foxing is present throughout. Original owner signature is present on the front pastedown, front end page, and the gutter on page 119. The owner was R. S. Brown in the front end page shows the date of 1849.

Richmond, VA: Samuel Shepherd - Printer to Commonwealth, 1843. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather with red and black labels to spine. Exterior shows scuffing and soiling with cracking in wear to the leather. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues, nothing torn or loose. Pages are toned due to age and foxing and spotting is present throughout. Front hinge is starting to open in the center. Previous owners names are written in several areas, it appears as book was passed down from father to son with the front and rear pastedowns showing the name R. S. Brown - May 1886, in the first end page shows the name C. L. Brown. In addition, the original owner signed 'Brown" twice on the title page. No other handwriting found in the book. Rear pastedown show some peeling to the edges.

Richmond, VA: William F. Ritchie, Public Printer, 1853. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Poor. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather. Exterior is in rough shape with both boards detached and heavy loss to the leather on spine. Front and rear boards are broken loose and have the first end page still attached. Despite the rough exterior the remaining binding of the text pages is good. Paper is toned due to age and foxing and spotting is present throughout. Front pastedown has a small personal library book in the corner and one of the front end pages has broken loose. Good candidate for rebinding or reference material. This is the original publication, not a reprint.

Wheeling, WV: W. J. Johnston, Public Printer, 1877. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper covered boards half bound in leather. Exterior shows moderate to heavy wear and leather is crusty. Leather hinges also cracked on both sides and spine edges are chipped. Interior hinges are cracking at boards but text pages are tight, nothing torn or loose. Paper is toned due to age and scattered foxing and spotting is present. Front pastedown shows original owners names stating this was a presentation to John Koonce (?) from a Thom G. Roofs (?) with an 1877 date. Some faded writing is also present on the front end page, no other handwriting found. This is the original edition of 1877, not a modern reprint.

Leather on spine is worn and cracked. The majority of the text pages are attached and secure but front end page is detached. This page has some handwriting, written lightly in pencil. The signature appears to read Major Charles Hunton(?) Brandwell(?), Thurman, Milford. The second end page contains an additional signature at the bottom which is written upside down along with an 1895 date. Hardcover, original marbled paper covered boards half bound in leather. Exterior shows moderate to heavy wear and leather is brittle and worn with cracking present at exterior hinges and boards are loose and held on just by the binder string. The leather on the spine has several patches missing. Interior binding of the text pages are secure, nothing torn or loose though some pages have creases from folds. Front pastedown has a small typed label showing the owners name and city. The first page still has the erratum slip of paper attached. Last end page has a crease caused by a page fold. Pages are toned due to age and scattered foxing is present with the end pages being the worst.

Hardcover, original marble paper boards half bound in leather, red label on spine. Exterior shows scuffing and chipping and leather is powdery and cracking at hinges. Internal binding is good and text pages are secure. Hinges show pulling at boards but remaining binding is fine. Pages are toned due to age and some foxing and spotting is present. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or library markings present..

London: Ingram, Cooke, & Co., 1852. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original 1852 publication in original binding. Cloth is quite worn and faded, spine shows tears, holes and chipping. Edges and corners also worn/bumped. The internal binding shows some pulling at boards and at a few quadrants of pages though pages are all still secure. The tissue guard on the frontispiece is still present and attached. Paper is tone due to age and light foxing is present throughout. Front pastedown and opposite end page contains original owner data written in pencil and in the upper right corner there is an oval embossed seal from the original bookstore. All engravings have been verified as being present. No other markings found other than what has been pointed out here, no bookplates, no library markings.

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & co., 1869. Hardcover. Good+. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardcover, no jacket as issued. Maroon cloth boards with gilt on spine. Dark brown end pages and pastedown. Numerous color and b&w illustrations. Original owner, a young man named Oliver Faulkner of Winchester, VA - went a bit overboard writing his name multiple times on both the front and rear brown pages as well as the end pages. Some in pencil and some in ink and some pages look like the writing is faded or erased. Binding good, no loose pages. First page of contents has a tear at hinge of about an inch.

Chicago, IL: Laird & Lee, 1893. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. H. Mayer. See photos for condition details. Softcover, original wraps scuffed and soiled with the name written on the top left. The exterior spine has been reinforced with a brown library cloth material. Edges and corners show bumps/wear and as a few stains present as well. Internal binding of the text pages are tight appears the front wrap was likely detached, which is why they put the tape on. The underside of the front wrap contains original owner's name and city, no other handwriting found. Pages are toned due to age and the end pages and pastedowns show spotting and foxing, text pages have scattered foxing but nothing severe.

New York: Derby & Jackson, 1857. 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards, blind stamped on front and rear with ornate gilt to spine. Exterior is heavily worn with corners rounded. Cloth is soiled and spine is chipping along top edge and left lower hinge area. Internal binding appears acceptable the book has the feel of something that was well read. Pages are toned due to age spotting boards/foxing is present throughout with some pages being severe. Some pages are quite darkened due to the publisher using different types of paper. As they well-worn book with heavy spotting but is still intact and very much readable. This is the second printing with the title first published in the year 1856.

Boston, MA: James Munroe and Company, 1847. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, blindstamped brown cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Exterior shows some spotting and soiling, edges and corners show bumps/wear. Corners are somewhat rounded and spine edges are chipped. The only reason for the low condition grade of fair is because it appears the first front end page is missing. The only reason this is suspected is because the front pastedown is pale yellow and the opposite page is not. The remaining binding is good though pages 65-67 has a little bit of play and you can see it sticking out of the exterior page edge by a fraction. The first two blank front end pages very faint evidence of something written in pencil and then erased, to we can just see faint markings and indentations. Canary yellow end pages. Front and rear pastedowns has a stamp of the owners name and address and front hinge just starting to split. Front end page has some partially erased pencil markings and rear end page shows light pencil scribbles. No handwriting noted on any of the text pages. Exterior boards show edge and corner wear as well as darkening. There is a light stain on the front board near the upper right corner. Pages are brown due to age and quality of paper and foxing is noted, including several areas where there's large spots from where the paper reacted with other paper it had come in contact with. Last end page has a small chip missing out of the upper corner.

Reading, PA : Pilger-Buchhandlung, 1899. 3rd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, pale olive green cloth boards, ornately decorated on front and spine. Exterior shows scuffing and light soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. There is the original owner's info on the back of the front end page along with a 1903 date. No other handwriting noted, no bookplates, no library markings, nothing torn or loose. The book is in German though it was printed in the United States.

Philadelphia, PA: D.B. Canfield and Co., 1857. Soft cover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original softcover tall (9 3/4") monthly publication. We have 15 different editions all from the estate of the Pennsylvania attorney Reuben C. Hale. Mr. Hale (1812-1863) graduated from Yale in 1830 and was a prominent figure in Pennsylvania state and local law practice, appointed Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia and eventually named Quartermaster General of Pennsylvania in 1861. He was equally prominent in voluntary military units in central Pennsylvania and eventually carried the rank of General. Pages show minimal to heavy foxing and some copies have dampstains and spots. Please see photos provided as they are of the actual publication that is listed for sale. Most carry the signature showing R.C. Hale or Reuben C. Hale.
