Exterior shows quite a bit of fading and soiling along with sunning to spine and edge bumps. Internal binding is good. Pages are toned due to age and foxing is present throughout. Orange end pages and front and rear are free of any handwriting, signatures or bookplates. This book actually contains three different titles - the first being "600 Ways to Get Rich When Your Pockets are Empty" (94 pp.), next numbered section is entitled "The Horse" (98 pp.) and the last numbered section is entitled "The Toilet" (115 pp.). The small section of the interior pages are bound slightly offset and seen in the photo of the exterior page edges.

Exterior shows spotting and soiling as well as edge and corner wear. There are a few small holes in the cloth and the rear board has a circular stain in the center. The internal binding is good, except for some minor pulling in the section of offset pages that starts around page 203. The front pastedown contains an inscription stating this was from the Library of the Redemptorists Fathers, and the title page contains a stamp stating "Redemptorist Library, St. Alphonsus Church of New Orleans. There is also a very faint stamp near the lower outside corner of the same page. Various degrees of foxing is present throughout with some pages being very minor and others showing quite a bit. Hardcover, full leather binding decorated on front with portrait of Lincoln. The book is in poor shape with both the front and rear boards detached, most of spine is missing. The internal binding is complete though the front decorated end page is also detached. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings present. Remaining pages are secure though paper is toned due to age. First edition thus with a single date of 1892 appearing on the title and copyright pages with no additional printings listed. Tissue guard to frontispiece is still present and attached. All exterior page edges gilt. This book is in rough shape and is basically in pieces, but is complete. As a first edition this is a good candidate for rebinding.

Both front and rear boards show quite a bit of wear to the outside fore edges, could be caused by handling or dampstaining. This is an ex-library copy, showing a 29th century bookplate on the front pastedown along with a stamp on the title page showing it came from the Redemptorist library, St. Alphonsus Church of New Orleans. No other markings noted. Binding is good, no hinge cracks, no torn or loose pages. Foxing is present with the worst appearing on the end pages as well as exterior page edges.

Internal binding is good other than some minor pulling. Pages are lightly tone due to age and some foxing and spotting is present with the worst being the end pages. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or library markings present. Laws include several sections on slaves and ownership, an interesting section on what defines a militia (pages 33 - 37) stating it is to be organized to provide for the defense of the commonwealth with officers and regiments, brigades etc. This is the original publication from 1858, not a modern reprint.

Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather. Exterior is quite worn in leather to spine is brittle with sections missing at the top and bottom, leather is cracked at both boards which are held on only by the binder string. Overall interior binding is good though pages 235 through 238 are protruding a bit and have some wiggle to them. Page 239 has a corner fold which has been straightened out. Paper is toned due to age and foxing is present throughout. Original owner signature is present on the front pastedown, front end page, and the gutter on page 119. The owner was R. S. Brown in the front end page shows the date of 1849.

Rear pastedown show some peeling to the edges.

Numerous color and b&w illustrations. Original owner, a young man named Oliver Faulkner of Winchester, VA - went a bit overboard writing his name multiple times on both the front and rear brown pages as well as the end pages. Some in pencil and some in ink and some pages look like the writing is faded or erased. Binding good, no loose pages. First page of contents has a tear at hinge of about an inch.

Description:
Philadelphia, PA: D.B. Canfield and Co., 1857. Soft cover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original softcover tall (9 3/4") monthly publication. We have 15 different editions all from the estate of the Pennsylvania attorney Reuben C. Hale. Mr. Hale (1812-1863) graduated from Yale in 1830 and was a prominent figure in Pennsylvania state and local law practice, appointed Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia and eventually named Quartermaster General of Pennsylvania in 1861. He was equally prominent in voluntary military units in central Pennsylvania and eventually carried the rank of General. Pages show minimal to heavy foxing and some copies have dampstains and spots. Please see photos provided as they are of the actual publication that is listed for sale. Most carry the signature showing R.C. Hale or Reuben C. Hale.
