Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:: Sun Young Kang,, 2005.. Edition of 400. 1.75 x 1.375"; 12 pages. Miniature. Inkjet printed with hand drawn images. Modified dos-dos structure. One sheet folded to form 12 pages. From the book: "The material world was a place fragmented and constantly changing; this changing aspect of the universe came to be called samsara." Wikipedia (5/3/12): "In modern parlance, samsara refers to a place, set of objects and possessions, but originally, the word referred to a process of continuous pursuit or flow of life. In accordance with the literal meaning, the word should either refer to a continuous stream of consciousness, or the continuous but arbitrary drift of passions, desires, emotions, and experiences.

"At first glance it looks like a flat star-shaped spool for thread, and indeed it does seem to have thread wound upon it; to be sure, they are only old, broken-off bits of thread, knotted and tangled together, of the most varied sorts and colors. But it is not only a spool, [
] Odradek is extraordinarily nimble and can never be laid hold of. [
] Am I to suppose, then, that he will always be rolling down the stairs, with ends of thread trailing after him, right before the feet of my children, and my children's…

Description:
Offenbach, Germany:: Ines von Ketelhodt,, 1990.. Edition of 50. 16 x 48 cm (6.3 x 18.9"); 10 pages. Accordion binding, printed on one side. Bound in printed linen-over-board cover. Photography, handset, letterpress, and bookbinding by Ines von Ketelhodt. Numbered and signed by the artist. Ines von Ketelhodt: "The silhouette of a kissing scene, printed in red, forms the background for Karoline von Günderode's ballade superimposed in black print. From close up, the 12 point type is legible on an abstract red color field. When the concertina is unfolded and viewed from a distance, the figures appear nearly life-size. The effect is an interplay between closeness and distance." Karoline von Günderode (1780 - 1806) came from a poor but aristocratic family. She felt frustrated by prescribed female roles of her place and time. Romantic poetry became an outlet for these frustrations.

Laredo, Texas:: Tom Knapp,, N.p... Edition of 50. 11 x 8.75"; 42 pages. 10 original 5 x 7" linocuts. Case bound with paper-covered boards of Mexican handmade Mata paper. Paper title with linocut illustration on front board. Tom Knapp: "The reading about the tumultuous Cristeros uprising in western Mexico of 1927-1929 consumed many fascinating days, and the decision to create a series of images of the rebellion followed shortly. ... "The prints, by any means, do not constitute a history of the CRISTIADA, but are only images which came to mind during the reading of the material available on this very important but largely suppressed or forgotten period in the saga of the turbulent history of western Mexico. The cruel attempt to destroy the Catholic church in the country by the dictator Elias Calles left many dead on both sides of the conflict, Army and peons alike.

El Sobrante, California:: Lisa Kokin,, 1992.. One-of-a-Kind. 7 x 9.5 x 3" closed; 20 panels Materials: shoe last, gameboard pieces, ribbon, grommets. Text embossed into board game pieces. Wooden shoe last hinged. Pages created from gameboard pieces with ribbon binding. Title board nailed to shoe last base. Signed and dated on the bottom of the base by the artist. Lisa Kokin: "A Jacob's ladder-type book with a humorous poem that I wrote after being verbally harassed on the street.
The shoe last is kind of a metaphor. I was being sexually harassed for my weight by some guys leaning out of a car -- symbol of oppression, crushed under the weight of sexism...something to that effect. As always I try to do when talking about serious subjects, I use humor as a vehicle for accessibility.

El Sobrante, California:: Lisa Kokin,, 1993.. One-of-a-Kind. 3 x 8.5 x 2.5"; 10 leaves. Materials: globe parts, leather, paper. Mixed media collage. Binding two holes with leather cord. Lisa Kokin: "'Si Fidel!' is a book made out of a cut-up globe. The text relates to a dream in which I became a close confidant of Fidel Castro. Only when I was sure he completely trusted me did I reveal that I was a lesbian." Lisa Kokin uses a variety of recycled and found materials to make book art. She says: "My definition of 'book' is open-ended, a freedom which is in many ways attributable to my lack of formal book art training. I am blissfully unaware of all the rules I am breaking as I go about my routine of sewing, stapling, riveting and otherwise reassembling objects to transform them into something readable. My books address themes which have preoccupied me for many years -- loss, the rescuing of memory, cultural and sexual identity, and a critique of the…

El Sobrante, California:: Lisa Kokin,, 2021.. One-of-a-Kind. 8 x 6.5 x 1.5"; 12 leaves plus front and back covers. Materials: aluminum, wire. Bound with wire through reinforced holes in the edges of the leaves. Initialed and dated by the artist. Lisa Kokin: "Part of my 'Wordless Library' series, this book has unreadable 'text' made by puncturing the aluminum with a sewing machine without thread." The twelve leaves produce two text pages. The artist's punctures are made to the recto side of the aluminum sheet producing another image of the punctures on the verso. It is much along the lines of blind embossing. Kokin says "I am intrigued by text based work that uses asemic text, which is something that looks like text but isn't made up of actual words."

El Sobrante, California:: Lisa Kokin,, 2022.. One-of-a-Kind. 7.25 x 6". Materials: Patinated copper, thread, safety pins, mull, silk. Signed on the back in upper left rectangle. Lisa Kokin: "Part of my 'Wordless Library' series, this book has text made with manipulated safety pins." Each character fashioned from a safety pin is up to the viewer to interpret. Asemic writing? Hieroglyphs? Codes? A new language? Lisa Kokin, Wordless Library Series: "In the 'Wordless Library' series, I make conceptual book-like objects by sewing on metal with my beat up old jalopy of a Kenmore sewing machine, circa 1975. It is immensely satisfying, even cathartic, to puncture the metal with my machine. I start each piece without a preconceived notion of what it will become. I patinate, I puncture, and I perforate. "The stitch less stitches follow lines reminiscent of text; sometimes they are even grouped into 'words.' Other times they look…

Jihae Kwon, colophon: "The first time I saw feral hens and roosters on the side of Kamehameha Highway, I thought they were cage-free chickens raised by someone who trusted them enough to let them roam around during daytime. Then I saw more of them on the beach. Then in the grocery store parking lot, on the school campus, in my neighbor's yard, and on the hood of my car. These homeless chickens were everywhere. I realized then they didn't belong to anyone. "They eat anything and they live everywhere. Locals don't eat them. Kids…
