Description:
This collection documents the struggle to end slavery in New York in the early nineteenth century.
In the 1790s about two-thirds of blacks in the state of New York were slaves. The coming decades brought a hard-fought, gradual struggle to end slavery in the state. In 1799 New York became the next-to-last Northern state to pass an emancipation law. That act declared that all children born into slavery there after July 4, 1799 would be free when they turned 25 (for women) or 28 (for men). Those born before 1799 were redefined as indentured servants for life, to work without pay but not subject to being sold. In 1817 New York finally agreed to free enslaved people born prior to 1799, but it delayed their emancipation for ten years. Slavery in New York State did not come to a complete legal end until July 4, 1827.
The collection comprises:
Sale and ultimate manumission of Jack, a slave in New York in 1816
Cornelius Hyatt and Richard Leverich. Manuscript document selling and then freeing a slave… Read More

Description:
The Haymarket Affair in Chicago was the most important event in American labor history. This dramatic Chicago newspaper reports on the events at the Haymarket, police actions, rioting, efforts to catch the bomb thrower, the roundup of anarchists, the discovery of the printed flyers for the mass meeting, and the reaction of Chicago businessmen.
When Chicago police killed two men demonstrating in favor of the eight-hour work day on May 3, 1886, activists called for a mass protest meeting in the Haymarket Square for the evening of May 4. Around 10:30 the police arrived to order the crowd to disperse. A homemade bomb was thrown in their path, killing one and injuring many more. Gunfire erupted resulting in seven policemen and at least four workers being killed, with many more wounded. Rioting ensued. That summer eight anarchists were tried and unjustly convicted for conspiracy in connection with the bombing.
"No single event has influenced the history of labor in Illinois, the United States, and even the… Read More

Description:
Sixth plate tintype (2 ½ x 3 ½ in.), hand-painted jewelry including a brooch, rings and earrings. Light wear. Very good condition.
This delightful photograph shows a kind-looking young black woman sitting with a somewhat sour-looking young white child. Both are finely dressed for the occasion, the woman in an elegant dress with lace collar and the child in a dress with an elaborate lace collar. The photographer has highlighted in gold the fine jewelry each wears.
This interesting and seemingly endearing pose reflects several solutions to the problem of keeping a young child still for the long exposure time required by the tintype process. It appears that the woman is leaning her head firmly against the child's. At the same time she holds the child's head still from behind. A broad black sash or belt further immobilizes the subject!

Louisa May Alcott discusses the impact of Little Women and its place in children's literature. She observes that "My 'Little Women' have much astonished their Momma by making many friends for themselves, & she can only account for it by the grain of truth that lay at the bottom of the little story." "The praise & value most you have given me, in saying that my effort to do something toward putting simpler & healthier food before the little people has been made evident at least, though very imperfectly carried out."
Alcott goes on, "I have such a love and reverence for children that it makes me heart-sick to see the trash offered them, when there is so much that is true & fresh & helpful in their own innocent hearts & lives, if wiser, older heads would only learn how to shadow it forth in hearty plain words for their pleasure & instruction. Description:
Original brown cloth. Light sunning, lower joint cracked through and partially split. Half morocco case.
First edition of Louisa May Alcott's first book. This fine Transcendentalist association copy is inscribed in an unidentified hand for Alcott's former tutor and mentor: "Miss Sophia Ford, with the best love of the Author 1855."
Sophia Ford lived with the Alcott family for nearly a year, in 1845, at their home "The Hillside" in Concord, Massachusetts. (Hillside was later renamed Wayside by Nathaniel Hawthorne when he lived there.) Louisa May Alcott at that time was 13 years old and had just gotten a room of her own and commenced to write. At Hillside she began writing Flower Fables and had the experiences which would form the basis for Little Women.
Alcott herself best described her relationship with "Aunt Sophia" in a reminiscence written in 1885: "[Sophia Ford] is one of the most prominent figures in my early Concord days, when she kept school for the little Emersons, Channings, and Alcotts in the… Read More

Description:
13 1/2 x 19 1/2 in. Acrylic on canvas, with small fabric American flag mounted at right. Signed and dated by the artist, "Muhammad Ali Feb 1-19-79." Framed.
Muhammad Ali was the embodiment of the revolution in American race relations in the second half of the 20th century. This painting captures the realization of his dreams. Here Ali celebrates America in a vibrant red, white, and blue painting incorporating an American flag. Ali's enormous and complicated impact on American culture is manifest in this painting reflecting his love of country and his fight for justice and equal rights.
The complex story of Muhammad Ali and America was one of confrontation, controversy and redemption. The young boxer Cassius Clay represented the United States in the 1960 Rome Olympics where he won a gold medal. On his return he declared, "To make America the greatest is my goal / So I beat the Russian and I beat the Pole / And for the USA won the medal of gold …" After defeating Sonny Liston for the heavyweight… Read More

Description:
Six albumen prints (2 ¼ x 3 ½ in.), original carte de visite mounts with caption on recto and publisher imprint on verso. Fine condition.
These is a complete collection of original carte de visite photographs of all six Revolutionary War veterans still surviving in 1864: William Hutchings (aged 100), Samuel Downing (aged 102), Daniel Waldo (aged 102), Adam Link (aged 102), Alexander Millener (aka Muroney) (aged 104), and Lemuel Cook (aged 105). A seventh man, James Barham, was believed to be alive but could not be located for the series.
These ancient veterans, all of whom had all enlisted as boys, were America's last link to the American Revolution as the Civil War was being fought to preserve the Union. Elias Hilliard sought the men out, photographed them in their homes, and published the portraits both individually and in a book, The Last Men of the Revolution (Hartford, 1864). Publication of the photographs and the book sparked national interest in the six surviving veterans of the… Read More

Description:
Folio (20 x 13 in.). 4pp. Untrimmed, never bound. Light browning. Near fine.

This is probably the earliest American runaway slave advertisement to feature an accurate likeness of its subject.

Sancho escaped from a Mississippi plantation and was presumed to have made his way north. Winthrop Sargent (1753-1820), who has signed the notice in print, had served as an officer in the Revolutionary War officer. He later became governor of Mississippi Territory and a plantation owner in Natchez, Mississippi. He offers a reward of up to $100 for Sancho's return and presents an extraordinary portrait of Sancho, "a good likeness," presumably made from a cut paper silhouette.

Sancho is described as "a Negro man, thirty years of age, about 5 feet high, very black complexion . . . & a fast walker." He "had learned the trade of a Barber and is in every respect a most accomplished servant for a gentleman or a family; was born and educated in his master's house; endeared to him and his mistress and his own wife and… Read More

Description:
Signed by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first two men on the Moon.
This image was taken by the Maurer Data Acquisition Camera (DAC, pronounced "dak"). The DAC made films through the Lunar Module Pilot's window during the approach and landing of the LM and took stop motion photographs during the EVA at the rate of one frame per second.
The photograph shows Armstrong and Aldrin raising the American flag on the Moon about 27 feet from the centerline of Eagle. Aldrin reported that the Apollo 11 flag was blown over by the blast of the rocket exhaust during takeoff.
Congress subsequently passed a bill declaring that the placement of the flag on the Moon "is intended as a symbolic gesture of national pride in achievement and is not to be construed as a declaration of national appropriation by claim of sovereignty."
Signed photographs of Armstrong and Aldrin on the lunar surface are scarce.
Armstrong operated the handheld camera on the Moon's surface. Thus in signed Apollo 11 lunar surface… Read More

Description:
A key navigational aid in taking man to the Moon and back to Earth. The astronauts of Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, used this very star chart to find their way to the Moon and back in July 1969. Collins has extensively annotated this star chart and written on it, "During the flight of Apollo Eleven, I used this chart to help me locate stars. (The numbers were entered into the Command Module Computer) Michael Collins CMP."
5 x 10 in. This star chart shows dozens of stars and constellations for reference aboard the Command Module Columbia. Key stars are marked and named in orange and black ink, and the stars to be entered into the Apollo Guidance Computer are boldly numbered 1 through 45.
"With the advent of the digital computer that was introduced into the Apollo spacecraft, the star charts changed to accommodate the new system. The star charts were redesigned from the circular chart type to a more rectangular chart. The constellations were aligned on the ecliptic.… Read More

Description:
First edition of Aristotle's Masterpiece, "the most popular book about women's bodies, sex, pregnancy, and childbirth in Britain and America from its first appearance in 1684 up to at least the 1870s" (Treasures, Library Company of Philadelphia).
Aristotle's Masterpiece—neither by Aristotle nor a masterpiece—is "the first sex manual written in English" (Norman). The work documents theories and practices of human reproduction during the early modern period. This first edition was assembled in part from excerpts of existing midwifery books, primarily Levinus Lemnius's The Secret Miracles of Nature (1658) and Jacob Rueff's The Expert Midwife (1658). The book's pseudo-Aristotle attribution both lent it an aura of credibility and hinted at the sexual nature of its contents. After the publication of a book called Aristotle's Problems in 1595, which included a few explicit discussions of sex, the name 'Aristotle' came to euphemistically indicate sexual knowledge to an early modern audience.

Description:
A RARELY SIGNED SPACE PHOTOGRAPH, signed by the crew of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the Moon: Neil Armstrong (commander), Buzz Aldrin (lunar module pilot), and Michael Collins (command module pilot) and by NASA Administrator Thomas Paine.
This dramatic Neil Armstrong photograph of Buzz Aldrin shows the deploying of the Passive Seismic Experiment, with the lunar module and the American flag in the background. The seismometer provided data on "moonquakes" and meteor impacts on the Moon. NASA describes the image: "Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin with the seismic experiment. Solar panels have deployed on the left and right and the antenna is pointed at earth. The laser reflector is beyond the antenna and, in the distance, the TV camera is silhouetted against the black sky."

8-cent Apollo 8 "In the Beginning God …" postage stamp, uncanceled. Mission emblem cachet. Fine condition. Encapsulated by CAG, which authenticated the Armstrong Family Collection.
Signed by the crew of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the Moon: Neil Armstrong (commander), Buzz Aldrin (lunar module pilot), and Michael Collins (command module pilot).
This is one of the famous "insurance covers" signed by the Apollo 11 crew to provide some financial security for their families in case the otherwise practically uninsurable astronauts failed to return from their mission.
Michael Collins and the other crew members personally designed the mission emblem, which shows an eagle descending to the lunar surface while holding an olive branch of peace. The design initially showed the olive branch in the eagle's beak, but when officials worried that the eagle was too menacing, the astronauts moved the branch to its extended talons.
Provenance: Neil Armstrong.

FIRST EDITION of "the first official drill manual for either the American regular or militia artillery" (Graves). This manual constrains detailed instructions on procedures in firing and handling artillery and training soldiers in its use.
"In 1810 a Congressional committee looked into ways of improving the training of the militia. One of the results was the publication by the Senate in December 1810 of a small manual entitled Compendious Exercise for the Garrison and Field Ordnance, as Practised in the United States. This 30-page pamphlet [pp 31-48 comprise amendments to other military regularions] contained drills on the new seacoast carriage designed by the Marquis de Montalembert, which were just coming into service, and the exercise of 4 and 6-pdr. field pieces and additional comments on the use of the prolonge. More than 130 feet of teletype paper in total, comprising 6 strips, each 8 ½ inches wide, in sections of varying length. Folded down into flat sections 18 inches in length. Minor wear, occasional short tears, faint red ink stain along one edge, last section with full horizontal tear across the text. First announcement of the D-Day landings, perhaps the most important event of the 20th century. This file of teletypes begins on the evening of June 5, 1944, with the recent Allied liberation of Rome. Early on June 6th, breaking news comes across the wire: "The German news agency Transocean says that the Allied invasion has begun." The reports continue with the first Allied news of the invasion, bulletin 95PA: "Today is D-Day. Allied Armies have landed on the coast of France in the mightiest military invasion ever undertaken. Tough American parachute troops, hardened in the Italian campaign, were the first to land behind Hitler's Atlantic wall." The final report of the day is a summary provided by… Read More

Description:
This spectacular color lithograph commemorates the Grande Semaine d'Aviation of 1909, the first international public flying event and a turning point in aviation history. The powered aircraft featured at the event dominate the center. Surrounding it are portraits of pioneering figures in flight (including Wright, Curtiss, Latham, Fournier, and Blériot) and vignettes from aviation history.

The event, held at Reims, France in August 1909, attracted more than 500,000 spectators to watch famous aviators compete in contests of distance, altitude, and speed, all from the massive grandstands constructed for the event. The meeting signified a transition in the public perception of flight. Once an experimental curiosity practiced by a few, it came to be seen as a viable technology with the potential for practical application.

This print, a supplement to Parisian newspaper Le Petit Journal, highlights technological advances in aviation history. The fall of Icarus is depicted in the upper right corner, next… Read More
