Some light overall soil, covers split along lower 1" of spine.. Correspondence related to accusations of libel made by Gerrit Smith against Royal Phelps and Watts Sherman of the New York Democratic Vigilant Association. The dispute arose from the latter publishing a "Manifesto" in which it was alleged that Gerrit Smith had full prior knowledge of John Brown's plan at Harper's Ferry. That Smith was well acquainted with and had supported Brown was not disputed, but Smith denied knowing Brown's plans for a bloody uprising.

New York: Aero Club of America, 1919. Broadside. 8.5" x 14". Printed both sides. Near fine, with two fold creases and a tiny chip to a lower corner.. Scarce entry form for the $25,000 Ortieg Cross-Atlantic Flight Prize, which was ultimately won by Charles Lindbergh in 1927. Augustus Post of the Aero Club of America approached hotelier Raymond Orteig to sponsor the prize, which he did. The prize was to be awarded to any aviator who completed a non-stop flight between New York and Paris, in either direction, within 5 years of the announcement of the prize in May, 1919.

When 5 years passed without a serious attempt, Orteig renewed the prize for another 5 years. This time several prominent and well-financed competitors emerged--several of whom were killed, crashed, or lost at sea. None was successful until the obscure and under-funded Lindbergh touched down outside of Paris after a 33 1/2 hour solo flight from New York's Roosevelt Field.
<br… Read More

Some light rubs and stains to edges of mount, other mild stains on rear of mount, none affecting the image.. Lovely photograph showing a string of 30 trout caught on the Skagway River, April 20, 1899. The fishermen, posing at each end of the string, are F. F. Clark and Charles Walker, with numerous other men standing in the street. Business signs that can be read include beer, dentistry, outfitters, etc. Skagway was a Klondike boom town, though the gold rush stampede had moved to Nome by the time of this image. A contemporaneous newspaper clipping describing the fishing exploit pictured is affixed to the back of the mount.

New Haven: Connecticut Branch, W. O. N. P. R., 1933. Broadside. 7" x 10 1/4. Single sheet printed on one side. Slight age toning. Fine condition.. This is an original handbill from a major women's group soliciting votes to repeal Prohibition in 1933.

Women's organizations--particularly the Women's Christian Temperance Union--are strongly associated with passage of the 18th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution and the national ban on alcoholic beverages it brought in 1919. The major role women played in getting Prohibition repealed is not as widely recognized, however.

This handbill was issued by the Connecticut Branch of the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform (W.O.N.P.R.). The W.O.N.P.R. was organized in 1929 by women who could no longer ignore the destructive (if unintended) consequences of Prohibition.

Here voters are asked to vote for ratification of the 21st Amendment, reminding them… Read More

[Chicago]: Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform, 1930. Single sheets. 6 1/8" x 9 1/8. Each broadside is mildly age-toned, all have creases from folding along the short dimension, two have light stains, and two have tiny chips at ends of a fold crease. Fine condition overall.. Women in the early 20th century were assumed to favor Prohibition, and indeed had been a powerful force--in the form of the Women's Christian Temperance Union--in getting it passed. By the late 1920s, however, Pauline Morton Sabin could not ignore Prohibition's very destructive (if unintended) consequences. She founded the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform in 1929 to fight for repeal, and within a year had attracted 100,000 members. The WONPR quickly became the nation's largest anti-Prohibition organization. It's goal achieved by passage of the 21st Amendment in December, 1933, the organization disbanded.

These four data and statistics… Read More
