Large octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, untrimmed, xxi, 176 pp. Near-Fine, with slightly bowed covers, in a darkened dust jacket with hair-line tear. Description:
New York: Wiley and Long, 1836. Octavo, string-bound wrappers, 30 pp. Top leaf loose, neat former-owner signature, soiling to wrappers. “Sir:-- / When one charged with the responsible duties of a legislator forgets the nature of the trust which he holds for the Commonwealth, and instead of consulting the common interests alone, endeavors to procure the enactment of laws of a purely local tendency, which, whilst they momentarily affect one portion of the country favorable, bear at the same time prejudicially upon others, and in the end, become of permanent disadvantage to the whole -- when one vested with the authority of a statesman narrows down his views to the attainment of some object of petty ambition, instead of following out an enlarged and liberal system of policy, by “giving up to party what was meant for mankind” -- when one clothed in the invulnerable armor of a representative of the people’s sovereignty becomes so lost to a proper sense of the dignified attitude in which he has… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1988. First Edition, stated. Octavo, navy blue cloth & gold boards (hardcover), 485 pp. Very Good+ in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: The Fool’s Progress is the story of Henry Holyoak Lightcap’s uncertain advance through life, recounted during a 3,500 mile journey from the acrid wasteland of Tucson, Arizona, to the “green, fuzzy, mist-infested hills” of a fictional Stump Creek, West Virginia. The journey -- Henry is accompanied by his dying dog, Solstice -- takes place in April 1980; the life journey begins over a half a century earlier, with the “mishap of birth” continuing as a series of adventurous episodes, amorous and otherwise, ranging from West Virginia to Europe to western America and back. Icaresque in form, personal in style, unique in point of view, The Fool’s Progress can best and only be summarized, in the author’s words, as “an Edward Abbey kind of novel.” Nobody else could have written such a book.… Read More

Seattle, Washington: Superior Publishing Company, (1965). First Edition. Quarto, orange cloth (hardcover), 190 pp. Very Good, with foxing (age darkened spotting); in a Very Good dust jacket with foxing and light edgewear. From dust jacket: The steel bridge across the Missouri was finished and the Northern Pacific’s Engineering Department decided to put it to the acid test. Eight of the road’s heaviest 4-4-0s were sent out onto the main span blanketing the track on the bridge from one end to the other. The bridge held! “One cannot but wonder what thoughts passed through the minds of the new bridge” muses Engineer, Author George Abdill, just as if he didn’t know. A working locomotive engineer on the Southern PAcific, Portland Division, Adbdill knows railroading. If ever a book is to be the “compleat railroader,” this one is it. In this, the fifth of his railroad pictorial histories, author Abdill has collected photos from a hundred dusty archives. Many of the photos exceed or… Read More

Paris: Leopold Cerf, 1882. Paris: Leopold Cerf, 1882. Paris: Leopold Cerf, 1882. Paris, Leopold Cerf, 1882. Four volumes bound into one. All first editions. Octavo, bound by Trow in 3/4 red morocco & marbled boards, top edge gilt, gilt-stamped spine, 159, [i] pp + 144 pp. + viii, [9] - 148, [i] pp + 156 pp. Plates, illustrations. This volume is from the personal library of Lafcadio Hearn. It bears his ownership signature on a front endpaper and his name stamp on the title page. In part, the book seems to have been a basis for HEarn’s first book, Stray Leaves from Strange Literature, first published in 1884. He seems to also have had an interest in the Armenian, Basques, and Arabic culture. Books bearing Hearn’s autograph are scarce, particularly volumes from his personal library. Fine, in a cloth jacket with calf label.

Description:
The University Press of Kentucky, (1971). First Edition. Octavo, cloth (hardcover), brown spine label, gilt letters, 354 pp. Fine in a Near-Fine, price-clipped dust jacket. From dust jacket: Critics and historians of French literature have for years accepted Francois de Malherbe as the fountainhead of French classical poetry, believing that he directly or indirectly influenced the production of most of the French poets of the seventeenth century. Those who opposed him blamed him for imposing restrictions on the century, while Boileau’s exultant proclamation of Malherbe as the savior of French poetry has been accepted as the ultimate verdict of the great classicist’s followers. Yet to admire a poet is not necessarily to imitate him, and to oppose him is not necessarily to deny his influence. Until the present study, the extent of Malherbe’s influence has never been fully documented. Mr. Abraham, by examining the prosody of most of the seventeenth-century poets, proves that seldom were… Read More

Description:
New Haven: Yale University Press, (1983). Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 444 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes light chipping. From dust jacket: This...collection of documents portrays the encounter of Africans and Europeans in the New World, in order to explore what was and is distinctly Afro-American in the cultures of the Americas. Vivid selections from travel books, journals, and missionary accounts give firm evidence that, contrary to widespread opinion, strong pan-African elements of social and cultural life were maintained under plantation conditions -- especially in the areas of worship, belief, entertainment, and other dimensions of expressive culture. Roger D. Abrahams and John F. Szwed have arranged the documents primarily according to the major areas of expressive life. Introductions to the book as a whole and to each section explore many of the issues in the continuing debate over the nature of Afro-American culture. In… Read More

Description:
New York: Doubleday, (2005). First Edition. Duodecimo, black cloth & brown boards (hardcover), gilt letters, uncut, 173 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers.”His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes -- extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture j-- caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history. Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807 ato 1837.… Read More
